Alva Beach to Hervey Bay

Monday, 18 July we spent the night at Alva Beach in a pretty nice caravan park. We did a short walk to the lookout point overlooking the beach then a quick plunge in the cold but refreshing water of the large swimming pool of the park.

The next day (Tuesday, 19 July) we travelled all day, and in the evening we set up camp in a free camp site at Saint Lawrence. There is a large protected wetland beside the camp site, a resting place for flocks of water birds, mostly Magpie Geese. We could hear them chatting all night, in between the many noisy freight trains passing through very close to the camp site. Wednesday morning we walked out to the viewing platform to have a look at the birds. Thousands of Magpie geese, and many other types, egrets, jabiru, black swan, etc. It was an interesting sight.

We also drove through the little town itself before heading South again. A very small township with not much life in it, seemingly struggling to survive. The only job opportunity here is the railway, but that does not seem very rewarding.

Wednesday (20 July) again we travelled most of the day, but we made a stop at The Caves, a little town just above Rockhampton and visited the privately owned Capricornia Caves with a guided tour. This is a series of limestone caves with some interesting stalactite and stalagmite formations - nice but not as rich as in the Jenolan Caves. One of the larger caves which has good acoustics is used for weddings and opera performances.

We spent the night at the Boyne River rest area near Benarabi, another free camp site. The whole place was full of caravans, we were lucky to catch the last available place just beside the main road. It was a bit noisy but we had a good sleep after all.

Thursday morning we continued to the South and by lunchtime we came to Hervey Bay, where we had booked a place for the next 3 nights.

Alva Beach kemping

A hétfő (jul. 18) éjszakát az Alva Beach kempingben töltöttük. Este még kinéztünk a tengerparti kilátó pontra, majd fürödtünk egy gyorsat a kemping nagyon szép nagy medencéjében. Jó hideg volt a víz, de jól esett.

Magpie ludak és egy kócsag

Másnap (kedd, jul. 19) egész nap utaztunk. Estefelé egy szabad táborhelyen telepedtünk le Saint Lawrence település közelében. A táborhely mellett egy nagy védett mocsaras terület van ahol rengeteg vizimadár, főleg Magpie lúd, tanyázik. Egész éjjel hallottuk a gágogásukat. Más zajok is voltak, egy csomó tehervonat elment a tábor melletti vasútvonalon.

Szerda reggel kimentünk a közeli madár-leshelyre megnézni a madarakat. Rengeteg Magpie ludat láttunk, de egy sor más fajtát is, kócsagokat (egret), egy gólya-fajtát (jabiru), fekete hattyúkat. Egy csomó kisebb kenguru-fajta (wallaby) is ugrándozott a mocsár körüli magas fűben.

Körüljártuk a kis települést is mielőtt tovább indultunk dél felé. Kis elhagyatott falucska, nem sok élet van benne, láthatólag küzd az életben-maradásért. Az egyetlen munkalehetőség itt a vasút, de az sem lehet túl kifizetődő.

Fagyökerek lenyúlnak a barlangba

Szerdán (jul. 20.) megint egész nap utaztunk, de déltájban megálltunk a The Caves nevű kis falunál Rockhampton fölött, megnéztük a Capricornia Barlangot. Ez egy magánkézben levő cseppkőbarlang, érdekes de messze nem olyan gazdag mint a Jenolan Caves a Kék Hegyekben Sydney mellett. Az egyik nagyobb termének igen jó az akusztikája, itt esküvőket szoktak tartani meg néha opera-előadásokat is.

Az éjszakát a Boyne River pihenőben töltöttük,egy másik szabad táborhelyen. Mikor odaértünk, már teljesen tele volt lakókocsikkal, épp hogy elcsíptük az utolsó szabad helyet közvetlenül a főút mellett. Kicsit zajos volt, de azért egész jól aludtunk.

Csütörtökön folytattuk az utat és dél tájban megérkeztünk Hervey Bay-be. Itt foglaltunk szállást a következő 3 éjszakára.
