North Australia Tour

Mount Isa, 7 May, 2016

We are on the road again! This is the start of a 3-month tour of the North, with a roughly planned but fairly flexible itinerary. Our first main destination is the Dampier Peninsula, just North of Broome, which happens to be exactly the opposite side of the continent, about 4-5,000 kms from Sydney, depending on the route taken. We had big plans to get across the outback along the shortest route, from Sydney up to Winton, then to Boulia and the Plenty Highway to Alice Springs. From there taking the Tanami Road up to Halls Creek, then Fitzroy Crossing and Broome - if everything goes well...

We left Sydney on Sunday, 1st of May, and made good progress through Gunnedah, then Moree, where we spent an afternoon enjoying the hot artesian baths. We found another nice hot spa in Mitchell, Queensland. We spent most nights at free roadside camp-sites, and enjoyed a few nice sunsets.

Unfortunately not everything went according to plan... We had some trouble with our 3-way fridge not working reliably on gas, which would be essential on the dirt roads without power for a few days. Also, the tail lights on our van not working again. This is a recurring problem that we thought had been fixed before our departure, but it happened again.

Due to these problems, we did not want to risk getting stuck on the Plenty Highway without a working fridge, so we came up to Mount Isa instead, hoping to get these problems fixed, then continue to Alice Springs on the sealed road through Tennant Creek.

We arrived yesterday, and went directly to an auto electrician. Unfortunately he found that the problem was far more complicated than we thought and it took until 5pm to get everything fixed. So we did not have time to get to the fridge dealer, and we don't want to stay here till Monday, so this will have to wait till we get to Alice Springs, but we can live with that on the sealed road where powered caravan sites are available.



Today we had a bit of rest, did some shopping and cooking. In the afternoon we went out to Lake Moondarra, previously called Leichardt Dam. This is the place where the locals go on weekends for a bit of fishing, boating and having fun. It is a nice man-made lake, between interesting rock formations. I could not resist to jump in for a cooling swim in the 35 degree heat.

Tomorrow we head to Barkly Homestead, a nice place we have visited twice before and liked a lot. Then on to Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

Megint úton vagyunk! Ez az első pihenő állomás a mostani 3 hónapra tervezett Észak-Ausztráliai túránkon. Az első fő cél-állomásunk a Dampier-félsziget, Broome fölött, ami Sydney-től kb 4-5-ezer km-re van, a választott útvonaltól függően, pont a kontinens másik oldalán. Az volt a tervünk hogy a legrövidebb útvonalon megyünk keresztül a földrész közepén, többnyire földutakon, de sajnos ez eddig nem teljesen sikerült...

Múlt vasárnap, május 1-én indultunk Sydney-ből, azóta leginkább csak utaztunk, több mint 2,200 km-t tettünk meg 5 nap alatt. Éjszakánként ingyenes útmenti parkolókban aludtunk, láttunk pár szép naplementét. Csak Moree-ban szálltunk meg egy kempingben, és egy délutánt az ottani artézi forróvizes fürdőkben töltöttünk. Másnap még egy hasonló fürdőt találtunk már Queensland-ben, egy Mitchell nevű kis településben.

Két napja sajnos meg kellett változtatnunk az utitervet. Két problémánk is van: az egyik a hűtüszekrénnyel, ami árammal és gázzal is működik, de most egyre nehezebb gázzal beindítani. Eddig még mindig sikerült nagy nehezen, de nem mertük kockáztatni, hogy a tervezett 3-4-napos földúton, ahol végig nem lenne áramunk, ne tudjuk beindítani és megromlik minden élelmiszerünk. Másrészt a lakókocsink hátsó lámpái sem működnek - pedig megcsináltattuk mielőtt elindultunk, de megint előjött ugyanaz a hiba. Ezért fájó szívvel úgy döntöttünk, hogy a jóval hosszabb (550 km-el) kerülő úton megyünk Alice Springs-be, és feljöttünk Mount Isa-ba, remélve, hogy itt meg tudjuk csináltatni a hibákat.

Tegnap de. 11 felé értünk ide, és egyenesen az autó-elektromos szerelőhöz mentünk, ahol el is vállalták a munkát. Amire nem számítottunk, az hogy kiderült, hogy a probláma jóval komplikáltabb mint gondolták, és csak du. 5-re lett kész. Persze jó sokba is került, de talán most sikerült véglegesen megoldani az összes ezzel kapcsolatos problémát, amit két korábbi szerelő "javításai" okoztak.

Így a hűtő-szerelőhöz nem jutottunk el, és ma már nem dolgoznak, de nem akatunk hétfőig ittmaradni, úgyhogy azt majd Alice Springs-ben próbáljuk megoldani. Addig meg csak sikerül működtetni valahogy.

Ma még itt maradunk, ránkfér egy kis pihenés, meg mindenféle háztartási munka is van amit el kell intézni.

Ahogy jöttünk felfelé, fokozatosan melegedett az idő, most itt már a kemény ausztrál outback őszben vagyunk, napközben 36 fok lesz, este 9-kor is még 33 volt, és reggelre sem ment sokkal 30 alá. Kicsit szenvedünk tőle, de majd megszokjuk. Van egy kis medence is a kempingben, abban lehet időnként lehűlni egy kicsit.

Így állunk ma. Holnap indulunk tovább, át a Northern Territory-ba. A Barkly Homestead-nál fogunk aludni, ahol már kétszer is jártunk. Aztán tovább Tennant Creek és Alice Springs felé.
