Alice Springs

Alice Springs, 12 May 2016

We left Mount Isa on Sunday 8 May, in full sun and above 30 degree heat, but the weather has changed after we entered the Northern Territory. After a quick lunch at a roadside rest place we continued Westward, and soon it started to rain, and the temperature has dropped to 21 degrees. It rained more than an hour, then it began to get warmer again after it stopped.

We reached the Barkly Homestead around 5 pm (actually, it was 4.30 as we passed into the NT time zone...). We have passed through and camped here twice in 2012, a very nice place, and again we spent the night here. It was not easy to find a suitable spot as the whole camping area was very muddy after the rain. The weather was still quite warm, and 100 % humidity, like in a sauna. We had a quick plunge in the pool, then dinner outside under the awning, an enjoyable evening.

Unfortunately we also realised when we arrived that the electrical problems with our car and van are not totally solved. The tail light are working on the van all right, but now the batteries in the van were almost flat by the time we arrived. So this saga is to be continued...:(( 

Monday morning we drove on towards Tennant Creek, and again, there was a big, heavy downpour for more than an hour. On paper, from the 1st of May it is officially the "dry season" here, but the rain does not know this. It seems we started our trip a bit too early. 

The Devil's Marbles

By the time we reached the Stuart Highway, the rain has stopped and the weather improved gradually. We got to the Devil's Marbles around 1 pm. This is an interesting formation of ancient granite rock boulders, carved to their current shape by the sun, the heat and water. They look like heaps of big potatos. We have been here in 2012, but it is a very nice camping spot, not free but very cheap as a national park, we were happy to visit again. 

After lunch we walked around the area, took photos and we had a very enjoyable evening. During the night we noticed a fire just beside the campground. It was burning all night, sometimes it seemed to be very close, a bit scary, some people even decided to leave, but the wind blew from the opposite direction, so we did not feel the smoke and it was not dangerous at all. At daybreak I climbed up to the closest potato hill and realised that the fire was actually quite far away by that time, and there were people and vehicles at the edge, managing the fire. So it might have been a controlled burning.

Tuesday we drove into Alice Springs and settled in to the same caravan park as four years ago. In the afternoon we booked someone to look at our fridge the next day, did some shopping, and had a surprisingly cold evening and night in the caravan park. 2 days earlier it was 38 degrees in Mount Isa, in Alice the daily maximum was 17, and it went down to 6 in the morning outside, 10 degrees inside our van. Fortunately we have a little electric heater that we can use when we have power.

Wednesday morning someone came out and within an hour our fridge was fixed. We had another little problem with the jockey wheel holder on our van, that we also managed to fix that morning. I then had to go to a doctor to clean my ears as they started to clog. I found another auto-electrician but they said to come back next morning. So it was a reasonably successful day...

This morning I got the car to the service, they checked the power to the Anderson plug (that connects to the van) and it seemed it was working OK. So tomorrow morning we will have to go back with the caravan connected, to see why the batteries are not charged...

Apart from all this trouble, we had some time to look around again and visit a few places we liked. Alice Springs is a well organised and maintained little town, with a lot of green trees, wide streets, lots of tourist and art shops. There are also many aboriginal people, families with children and old, wandering around the streets aimlessly. It is so sad to see all these people not finding any purpose in life, having been lost their ancient lifestyle but not being able to fit into the current environment and conditions. 

Simpsons Gap

We went up to the ANZAC Hill to get a 360-degree view of the town and surroundings. We visited the Botanic Gardens created by a very determined woman, Miss Olive Pink in the 1950s. This afternoon we went out towards the West McDonnell Ranges, and walked to the Simpsons Gap, then to Standley Chasm, two interesting places along the Larapinta Trail, that we've seen in 2012 but thought they are worth a second look.

In fact, aside of the problems we needed to fix, we are staying here to wait for the road conditions to improve. Our plan is to head to Halls Creek in Western Australia, through the Tanami road, a 1000 km dirt road. It was closed due to the big rain the previous days when we arrived here. Now it is open, but it is still in quite bad condition. We want to give it a few more days to dry out before we leave. So tomorrow - after having our battery charging problem fixed (fingers crossed!) - we head out to the East McDonnell Ranges for a few days. That part we have not seen yet, and it seems there are some nice places there as well.

Vasárnap indultun tovább Mount Isa-ból, meleg napsütéses időben, de miután átértünk Northern Territory-ba, megváltozott az idő. Egy gyors ebéd-pihenő után tovább mentünk nyugat felé. Hamarosan esni kezdett és lehűlt 21 fokra. Több mint egy órát esett, aztán újra felmelegedett.

Du. 5 felé értünk a Barkly Homestead-hoz (pontosabban csak fél 5 volt, mert közben átléptünk a Northern Territory időzónába). Itt már kétszer is aludtunk 2012-ben, nagyon kellemes hely, most is itt töltöttük az éjszakát. Elég nehéz volt alkalmas helyet találni, az egész kemping-terület egy sártenger volt. Az idő még jó meleg volt és 100%-os páratartalom, mint egy gőzfürdőben. Fürödtünk egyet a kemping úszómedencéjében, kint a lakókocsi előtt vacsoráztunk, kellemes esténk volt. 

Sajnos arra is rájöttünk, hogy a lakókocsink elektromos problémái korántsem oldódtak meg teljesen. A hátsó lámpák most égnek, viszont a lakókocsi akkumolátorai majdnem lemerültek mire megérkeztünk. Úgyhogy ennek a végeláthatatlan sorozatn még további folytatása lesz... 

Hétfő reggel tovább indultunk nyugat felé, és hamarosan megint esni kezdett. Nagy zápor volt vagy egy óráig ömlött, ami kicsit meglepő. Papíron május elsejével kezdődik itt a "száraz évszak", az eső ugy látszik, erről nem tudott. Lehet hogy kicsit túl korán indultunk erre az útra...

Mire elértük a Stuart Highway-t (a kontinenst É-D irányban átszelő főútvonalat), elállt az eső  és fokozatosan javult az idő. Egy óra tájban értünk a Devil's Marbles-hez. Itt érdekes ősrégi gránit-kéződmányek vannak, amiket a nap, a hő és a víz nagyjából gömbölyűre formált, úgy néznek ki mint óriási krumpli-hegyek. Itt is jártunk már 2012-ben, de ez egy nagyon kellemes kemping hely, nem ingyenes, de nagyon olcsó, szívesen jöttünk vissza.

Ebéd után újra végig-mászkáltunk a krumpli-hegyeken, csináltunk sok fotót, aztán egy nagyon kellemes estét töltöttünk a kempingben. Éjszaka észrevettük, hogy tűz van a táborhely közelében. Egész éjjel égett, néha ngyon közelinek látszott, de szerencsére a szél az ellenkező irányból fújt, nem éreztük a füstöt és nem volt veszélyes. Hajnalban felmásztam a legközelebbi krumpli-dombra, onnan láttam hogy a tűz már elég messze van, és emberek és járművek vannak körülötte, valószínűleg ők gyújtötták és irányították a (megelőző) tüzet. Közben a napfelkelte is nagyon szép színeket produkált.

Keden délfelé érkeztünk meg Alice Springs-be, megszálltunk ugyanabban a kempingben mint négy éve. Meglepően hideg volt. Két napja Mount Isa-ban 38 fok volt, itt napközben a maximum 17, reggelre lement kint 6 fokra, bent a lakókocsiban is csak tíz fok volt. Szerencsére van egy kis hősugárzónk, amit ilyenkor ha van hálózati áramunk, tudunk használni.
  
Délután sikerült egy hűtőszekrény-szerelőt szerezni, másnap reggel ki is jött, és egy órán belül ki is cserélte a hibás alkatrészt. Volt egy másik kis gondunk is a lakókocsival, azt is sikerült megoldani szerda délelőtt. Találtam megint egy elektromos szerelőt, de csak ma reggel fogadott. Megmérték az autóból a lakókocsi felé kimenő feszültséget, ott minden rendben van. Úgyhogy holnap reggel vissza kell majd menni a lakókocsival együtt, hogy megtalálják, miért és hol nem megy a töltés.  

A mindenféle bajok orvoslása mellett azért volt egy kis időnk nézelődni is. Alice Springs egy nagyon jól szervezett és rendben tartott kisváros, sok zöld növényzettel, széles utcákkal, sok turistával és helyi műtárgy-boltokkal. Sok aboriginal-t is lehet látni, gyerekes családokat, öregeket, látszólag céltalanul kóborolnak az utcákon. Szomorú látvány.

Felmentünk a város közepén az ANZAC-hegyre, ahonnan teljes kör-kilátás van a városra és a környező hegyvonulatokra. Sétáltunk a botanikus kertben, amit egy elszánt nő létesített az 1950-es években. Ma délután kiautóztunk a West McDonnell ranges felé, a Simpson Gap-hoz, majd a Standley Chasm-hoz, két érdekes szakadék a hegyvonulatba, ahol már jártunk négy éve, de úgy gondoltuk, érdemes mégegyszer megnézni.

Tulajdonképpen az út-viszonyok javulására várunk. A Western Australia-i Halls Creek-be szeretnénk innen tovább menni az ún. Tanami Road-on, ami egy kb. ezer km-es földút. Mikor ideértünk, le volt zárva a korábbi eső miatt. Azóta már megnyílt, de még mindig elég rossz állapotban van. Mág várunk pár napot hogy jobban felszáradjon mielőtt arra indulunk. Ezért holnap - miután az akku-töltést sikerült megjavíttatni (reménykedünk!) - elmegyünk pár napra az East McDonnel ranges-be, ahol még nem jártunk, de erről is jókat olvastunk.
