The East MacDonnell Ranges

Friday (13 May) morning we had to pack up very quickly and by 8 am we were at the auto-electrician workshop. It took more than two hours, but finally they found the problem - a burnt-out fuse in a hidden place - and fixed it, for another nice sum, but we hope it will be really the end of this long and expensive story.

Walk on the West rim

Then we headed out Eastward from Alice Springs on the Ross Highway. It was an easy drive on a good sealed road, and after about an hour we turned into Trephina Gorge Nature Park. About 8 km from the turn-off (4 km gravel and a few creek-crossings) we reached the campground. It is a very nice spot, beside the dry river-bed, between towering impressive rock hills. We settled down and spent the next 3 nights here. 

After lunch and a bit of rest, we went to have a look in the gorge itself. About an hour-long walk led us first up the West-side rim, then down to the gorge and back along the river-bed. 

In the evening we did some cooking and had dinner and played outside under the awning. The sun went down pretty early, by 6pm it was almost completely dark, but it was quite warm, a welcome change after the cold evenings in Alice Springs, very enjoyable under the clear starry sky.

Saturday at daybreak we climbed up again on the Western rim for a view of the surroundings in the morning sunshine.

After breakfast we drove out to N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park, on a 11-km quite difficult 4WD track with several water crossings. A short walk leads across the gorge, where many aboriginal rock carvings, called petroglyphs, can be seen. They are said to be between 2 to 10 thousand years old. We saw some of them, they were not as interesting as what we have seen in the Kakadu NP, but the landscape itself and the vegetation were impressive enough.

We had our picnic lunch at the gorge after the walk, then on the way back we made a short detour to Ross River Homestead. It functions now as a resort, but the old furniture and many old photographs still show the old lifestyle of the original owners.










We started Sunday with another walk, this time on the Eastern side of the gorge, called Panorama circuit, but we did only half of it. Then the main program of the day was a visit to

Old machinery at Arltunga

Arltunga Historical Reserve, another 33 km gravel road, but this was well maintained and easy. Arltunga was the first European settlement in Central Australia, established in 1887 when gold was discovered in the area. The gold rush ended in 1917, but some residents remained in the town until the 1950s.

There is an impressive visitor centre, with a lot of information, old tools and machinery, photographs and personal items. We drove around the large area where once the town was scattered, saw the old (now reconstructed) police station, some other ruins, mine sites and an old cemetery. It is hard to imagine how these people could survive in this very isolated, hot and dry environment.

After 3 very enjoyable days in the East MacDonnell ranges, on Monday, 16 May, we packed up and came back to Alice Springs to prepare for our trip through the Tanami Desert.

Május 13 péntek reggel gyorsan felpakoltunk és nyolckor már az autó-elektromos szervizben voltunk. Kétórai keresgélés után végül sikerült megtalálni a hibát, egy rejtett biztosítékot ami félig kiégett, amit aztán egy újabb szép összegért kicseréltek. Reméljük, hogy most már valóban ez lesz a vége ennek a hosszú és igen drága históriának.

A Ross Highway-n hagytuk el Alice Springs-t kelet felé, és alig egy órával késobb megérkeztünk a Trephina Gorge Nature Park-ba. A táborhely egy száraz folyómeder partján van, kétoldalt magasra tornyosuló sziklafalak között. Letáboroztunk és itt töltöttük a kovetkezo 3 éjszakát.

Ebéd és pihenés után elmentünk körülnézni a szakadékban. Felmásztunk a nyugati oldal peremén, majd le a szakadék túloldalán, aztán vissza a folyómederben.

N'Dhala Gorge

Este foztünk, kint vacsoráztunk és játszottunk a lakókocsi elott. A nap nagyon korán lement, 6 óra felé már majdnem teljesen sötét volt, de kellemes meleg este, váratlan meglepetés az Alice-ben töltött hideg éjszakák után. Gyönyöru csillagos égbolt, holdfény...

Szombaton napkelte táján ujra felmásztunk a nyugati fal tetéjre, szép látvány volt a korai napsütésben. Reggeli után elautóztunk a N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park-ba, 11 km igen nehéz földúton. Ebben a szakadékban osi, öt-tízezer éves szikla-vésetek, ún. petroglyph-ek láthatók. Láttunk is egy párat, én nem találtam olyan érdekesnek mint amiket a Kakadu nemzeti parkban láttunk négy éve. De a környezet, a növényzet maga is elég érdekes volt.

Ross River Homestead, ebédlő

Hazafelé tettünk egy kitérot a Ross River Homestead (kb. farm-ház) felé. Ez egy régi család lakóhelye és gazdasági központja volt, ma szálloda-étterem üdülo-központként funkcionál. De a régi családi épület belso berendezése még látható, sok régi fényképpel együtt az eredeti birtokosok életérol.

A vasárnap reggelt egy újabb sétával kezdtük, ezúttal a szakadék keleti oldalán másztunk fel kb félútig az ún. Panoráma túra vonalán. 

Temető, Arltunga

Reggeli után a fő program az Arltunga Historical Reserve látogatása volt. Ide is 33 km földút vezetett, de ez egy könnyű, jól karbantartott szakasz volt. Artlunga volt az első európai település Ausztrlália középső részén. Aranybányászok alapították 1887-ben, de már 1917-re végetért az aranyláz. Néhány lakos még maradt az 1950-es évekig. Találtunk egy nagyon impresszív látogató központot, ami rengeteg információt, képet, használati tárgyakat, szerszámokat, gépeket mutatott be. Körülautóztunk az egykori város területén, láttuk az egykori rendőrség valamikor lerombolt de mára ujjáépített épületét, néhány másik romot, pár magán-bánya helyszínét és egy régi temetőt. Nehéz elképzelni hogy tudtak emberek élni ebben az elhagyatott, forrő száraz környezetben.

Három nagyon kellemes nap után felpakoltunk és visszamentünk Alice Springs-be, hogy felkészüljünk a következő útszakaszra a Tanami sivatagon keresztül.
