We had the opportunity to visit a few beautiful waterfalls during the cruise.
King George Falls

Perhaps the most spectacular event was the visit at King George Falls. On the second day, we slowly travelled in the Explorer up on the King George river, in between high rugged vertical sandstone cliffs towards the twin falls of the same name. The falls were discovered and named by C.P. Conigrave during a zoological expedition in 1911. The majestic sight of the falls was only slightly disturbed by another ship anchored just below, in between the two branches. The falls are about 80 m high. At this early part of the dry season there was still a fair amount of water flowing, but it was hard to imagine that it was this water that carved out this deep valley between those magnificent high sandstone walls - mostly during the wet seasons in a few hundred million years, of course.
Just beside the left branch of the falls, the more adventurous among the guests, including us, landed on the rocks and climbed up to the top of the falls, led by Steve and his helpers. It was a fairly difficult climb clambering from rock to rock in the very steep hillside, but after reaching the top, we were rewarded by a splendid view of the valley as well as a quick refreshing dip in the cool waters of the river above the falls.
King Cascades

The cascades were named after Phillip Parker King, one of the early explorers of the region. We had to cruise some 30 kms up the Prince Regent River to reach the cascades, but the trip was interesting itself. This river is remarkably runs arrow straight for more than 250 kms in a fault line in the rock base, and it is flanked by muddy mangrove bushes on both sides. Many animals a birds live in the mangroves, and we saw a few crocodiles on the shore and in the water.
The cascades came up on the left bank in a small basin off the river. Although it is not as high as the King George falls, it is beautiful in its peacefulness and solitude. After enjoying the view from the Explorer, again the more adventurous had the chance to land on the side and climb up to the water pool at the top for a refreshing plunge in the cool water.
Horizontal Falls
Horizontal Falls is one of the main attractions of the Kimberleys. It is located in Talbot Bay, far from any town, it can only be accessed by sea or air, but there is a company running a continuous service by seaplanes to bring in the tourists and show them the falls. We have been here in 2012 and went through this experience, but were happy to see it again.

The falls are created by the very strong tidal currents as they rush through two narrow gaps in the vertical rock walls between the inner, middle and outer bays. Depending on the time, there may be a 2 to 4 m difference in the water level between the two sides. The rushing water and the turbulent sea on the outside is an exhilarating experience when we cross the 40 m wide gap in a small but powerful boat.
Unfortunately this time the tides were not very high, so the crossing of the gaps were not as dramatic as in 2012, but still it was an enjoyable experience. And also due to the calmer water, this time we could go across the inner, smaller gap, which is only 7.5 m wide.

Útközben alkalmunk volt néhány szép vízesést is közelről megnézni.

| A King George folyó a vízesés tetejéről |
Talán a leglátványosabb helyszín volt a King George vízesés. A második napon hajóztunk fel lassan a King George folyón, magas szakadozott függőleges sziklafalak között, míg elértük a két iker-vízesést. A helyet C.P. Conigrave fedezte fel 1911-ben egy zoológiai expedíció alatt, és az akkor uralkodó angol királyról nevezte el. A vizesés látványán sajnos egy másik hajóval is osztoznunk kellett, de így is magasztos látványt nyújtott. A vízesés kb. 80 méter magas. Most, a száraz évszak elején még viszonylag sok víz volt benne, de így is nehéz volt elképzelni, hogy ez a víz vájta ki ezt a széles, mély völgyet a sziklafalak között - persze jobbára az esős évszakokban párszáz millió év alatt.
A vállalkozó kedvűek a csoportól, velünk együtt, partraszálltak a baloldali vízesés mellett, és felmásztunk a tetejére Steve vezetésével. Elég nehéz munka volt feljutni a hatalmas sziklák között kúszva, de miután felértünk a csúcsra, az alattunk fekvő mély völgy csodálatos látványt nyújtott, és nagyon jól esett a fürdő a vízesés feletti nyugodt, hűvös vízmedencében.
King Cascades
Ez a hely nem egy királyról kapta a nevét, hanem Phillip Parker King-ről, az egyik korai felfedezőről. Mintegy 30 km-t utaztunk fel a Prince Regent folyón hogy elérjük a vízesést, de az út maga is érdekes volt. Ez a folyó több mint 250 km-en keresztül nyílegyenes vonalban halad, egy repedés mentén a sziklás altalajban. Két oldalán iszapos-mocsaras mangrove-erdő kíséri, amiben sok állat és madár él. Mi is láttunk néhány krokodilt a parton sütkérezni, meg a vízben.
A vízesés a baloldali parton egy kis mellék-öbölben van. Nem olyan magas, mint a King George, de moszattal-növényekkel borított lépcsőzetes sziklákon folyó víz gyönyörű látványt nyújt. Itt is partra szálltunk egy páran és felmásztunk a vízesés fölé egy rövid fürdésre.
Horizontal Falls
Horizontal Falls a Kimberley régió egyik fő attrakciója. A Talbot öbölben van, távol minden várostól, csak légi vagy vizi úton lehet idejutni, de egy vállalat folyamatosan hozza-viszi a turistákat hidroplánnal hogy megmutassa nekik ezt a különleges természeti eseményt. Mi már jártunk itt 2012-ben és megcsodáltuk egyszer, de szívesen visszajöttünk ujra megnézni.

A vízesést az ár-apály mozgás hozza létre amint átzúdul két szűk nyíláson a magas sziklafalak között a külső- középső és belső öblök között. Az időponttól és a dagály erősségétől függően 2-4 méter különbség is lehet a külső és belső öböl vízszintje között. A szűk átjárón átzúduló és a külső oldalon kevergő víz fantasztikus és egy kicsit szorongató látvány amint kis, de nagyon erős motorcsónakban áthajtunk a 40 m széles szoroson.
Ezúttal sajnos a dagály nem volt túl magas, az áthaladás nem volt olyan drámai, mint az első alkalommal, de most is érdekes látvány volt. És a nyugodtabb víznek köszönhetően, most a belső, szűkebb nyíláson is át tudtunk menni, ami csak 7.5 m széles.
