This is a very different adventure from the previous ones. This time, we are leaving the caravan and the car at home, but it will be an adventure nonetheless: we are flying to Darwin, will spend 2 nights there, then we'll go on a 10-day cruise from Darwin to Broome, along the Kimberley coast line, exploring all the interesting natural and cultural sites along the way. Finally, we'll spend 3 nights in Broome, to have a rest after all the tiresome excursions, to have a chance to revisit some of our favourite places around the town and especially to enjoy a bit more of its wonderful climate at this time of the year. This was all part of a package deal, including airfares, transfers, hotel accommodation and the cruise itself. It cost a fair bit of money, but my coming big birthday gave us a good excuse to take it.

We left Sydney on a cold morning on Wednesday, 30 May, and by lunchtime, we landed in Darwin in clear sunny warm weather. We have been in Darwin twice before, we know it quite well, but we enjoy the climate, the beautiful tropical vegetation, and the coastal environment, so we were happy to spend a bit of time here again. We walked around the town centre, down from the Esplanade to the deck-chair cinema, the new Waterfront development.

We had a half-day sightseeing tour included in the deal. We have seen most of the sites, but we did not mind seeing them again: the Parliament, the old Government house, the "Tree of Knowledge" with the bells of the Beagle around it, the St.Mary's Cathedral, the museum and art gallery. One thing we did not see before was the George Brown Botanic Gardens, and it was worth a visit: an impressive collection of tropical trees and flowers in a nice undulating setting.

We walked out to Stokes Hill Wharf, and had lunch looking at the sea and the flocks of seagulls and kites flying around and fighting for the morsels thrown up by people. Then we went back to the Waterfront and spent a lazy afternoon on the beach. In the evening, it was time to pack our bags, ready for embarkation the following morning.

Ez alkalommal otthon hagytuk a lakókocsit és az autót, de azért ez is egy nagy kaland lesz: elrepülünk Darwin-ba, ott töltünk 2 napot, aztán egy 10-napos hajóútra megyünk Darwin-ból Broome-ba a Kimberley régió partmenti vidékén. Útközben megnézhetjük a partvidék természeti és kulturális látnivalóit. Végül Broome-ben töltünk 3 éjszakát, hogy kipihenjük magunkat, újra láthassuk a kedvenc helyeinket és még egy kicsit élvezzük a remek klímát ebben az évszakban. Ezt az utat mindenestül egy csomagban kaptuk, repülőjeggyel, szállodákkal, transzferrel és a hajóúttal együtt. Jó sokba került, de a közelgő kerek születésnapom jó ürügy volt, hogy belevágjunk.
Darwin
Május 30.-án szerdán indultunk Sydney-ből, egy hideg reggelen, és déltájban már Darwin-ban szálltunk le meleg napos időben. Kétszer is voltunk már Darwin-ban, jól ismerjük, de szeretjük a klímát, a csodás trópusi növényzetet és a tengerparti látványt, szívesen jöttünk vissza megint. Sétáltunk a városközpontban, az Esplanade-ról le a kertmozihoz, és tovább a kikötő melletti új turista központ felé.
A programunkban volt egy félnapos városnézés is. A legtöbb helyen jártunk már, de jó volt ujra látni: a modern Parlamentet, a régi Kormányzó épületét, a "Tudás fáját" a Beagle hajó (Charles Darwin hajója) harangjaival, a St.Mary templomot, a múzeumot. Egy helyszín amit most láttunk először, a George Brown botanikus kert. Érdemes volt megnézni, sok érdekes trópusi fát és virágot láttunk egy tágas dombos-lankás terepen. |

Kigyalogoltunk a Stokes Hill rakpartra a kikötő külső oldalán, és ebéd közben a felettünk-mellettünk köröző sirályok és barna kányák csapataiban gyönyörködtünk amint az ebédelőktől feldobott morzsákon marakodtak. Délután a vízparti szabad strandon pihentünk és élveztük a meleg nyári időt és a vizet. Este aztán bepakoltunk, felkészültünk a behajózásra.
