Kununurra and Keep River NP

We arrived to Kununurra on Thursday, 9 June, and stayed for 3 nights. By chance, we got one of the best places in the Kimberleyland caravan park, in the first row, with beautiful views of Lake Kununurra. We have been here before, but this is a nice place, worth a second visit. We did some shopping, cooking, visited a few sights, and spent a lot of time just resting and enjoying the view from beside the van. The weather was very nice, not too hot, and quite dry, a relief after the humid days in Broome. There is also a swimming pool, but there were always enough very noisy children in it to stay there for too long.

One morning we got up early and went for a walk in Mirima National Park, also called Hidden Valley, which is located right on the edge of the town. The parks main feature is its sandstone formations, similar to the domes of the famous Bungle Bungles. They were formed at the same time, around 350 million years ago, through the same weathering conditions. The short walk climbs up to a lookout with great views of the surrounding domes and the Kununurra Valley.

Ivanhoe Crossing

We drove out South to the Zebra Rock Gallery, where various artefacts and jewellery made of zebra rock, a special hard rock made up of differently coloured sediment, are exhibited and sold. We went up North to the Ivanhoe Crossing, where the Ivanhoe road, once the main road to Wyndham, crosses the Ord river. Four years ago it was closed due to the high water level; this time it is open, but still quite a lot of water flowing on it. We haven't seen anyone crossing it, but there are always quite a few people fishing at the two sides of the river.

Friday afternoon we had free entertainment in the park. A solo guitarist played and sang on a little podium just in front of our van. His name was Steve Case, he had a good voice, and played many nice old songs from the 1960-70s, a mixture of rock and country songs, including some of our old favourites, like "The House of the Rising Sun", "I'm a believer", "Helpless, Helpless...". It was a very enjoyable afternoon.

On Sunday, 12 June, we left Kununurra, passed through to the Northern Territories, and just 3 km-s after the border, we turned into the Keep River National Park. This is a relatively small park compared with the famous ones like Kakadu NP, but the scenery and the landforms are just as spectacular. The East side is lined by the dramatic escarpments of the Victoria River, while the west is marked by the sandstone ranges of the Kimberleys. We drove up North to the Gurrandalng camp site, 18 km from the entrance on a well maintained, easy but still very dusty gravel road. It is a very nice camp site, with a huge rocky outcrop in the middle.

Keep River NP

We stayed here for 3 nights, and completed all the walks in the park. One starts directly from this camp site, a 2 km circuit weaving through various interesting sandstone formations and beautiful flora.

Next morning we got up very early, just after 6 am, still in the dark (as we passed to the Northern Territory, we moved back in time by 1.5 hours, which means that the sun is rising after 7 am and sets around 6.30 pm), had breakfast and drove up to the other camp site called Jarnem, about 20 km further North. A 7 km loop track starts from here, including a lookout and a site where some ancient rock art can be seen.

The views from the lookout were indeed stunning in the early morning lights. The red ochre rock paintings were a bit disappointing after what we had seen in the Kakadu NP in 2012. But the scenery and the varied vegetation are splendid, a very pleasant walk overall.

Today we did the Jinumum walk, a 3 km return track following the bed of the Keep river into a narrow valley between steep rock walls. It leads to a site once used by the local aboriginals as a wet season shelter. Under a rocky overhang there is a midden containing the remains of many meals over thousands of years, mussel shells, bones and tools. Some rocks on the ground have hollows where seeds were ground in preparation of damper-like bread. On the overhanging rock face there were also a few ancient ochre paintings.

Then we drove down South to visit the Ginger's Hill, with an interesting ancient stone structure, typical of many built by aboriginals through this region. According to the info sign, it was used to catch birds of prey.

Finally we walked around Cockatoo Lagoon, which has permanent water throughout the dry season, and as such, large numbers of water birds find refuge here. We saw a little egret and a cormorant among the water lilies, and heard a lot of other birds around. The vegetation around the lagoon is beautifully lush, with pandanus and kapok trees among the eucalyptuses.

We enjoyed very much this little park, and wondered why it is not as famous as the Bungle Bungles or the Kimberleys. In any other country this would be a major tourist destination - although we did not mind having so few people around...

Csütörtökön, június 9-én értünk Kununurra-ba, és ott maradtunk 3 napig. Szerencsénk volt, az egyik legjobb helyet kaptuk a Kimberleyland kempingben, az első sorban, szép kilátással a Kununurra tóra. Jártunk már itt, de szivesen jöttünk vissza erre a kellemes helyre. Kicsit vásároltunk, főztünk, ellátogattunk néhány szép helyre, és főleg pihentünk, üldögéltünk a lakókocsi mellett az árnyékban. Az idő nagyon kellemes volt, nem túl meleg és száraz, nagy megkönnyebbülés a párás napok után Broome-ban. Van egy úszómedence is a kempingben, de sajnos mindig volt elég zajos gyerek benne ahhoz hogy ne maradjunk túl soká.

Egy reggel felkeltünk jó korán és elmentünk a Mirima nemzeti parkba, ami közvetlenül a város mellett van. A park homokkő formái nagyon hasonlóak azokhoz amiket a Bungle Bungle parkban lehet látni. Egyidőben keletkeztek, kb 350 millió évvel ezelőtt, hasonló időjárási ciklusok alakították őket. Egy rövid séta felvezetett egy kilátó ponthoz, ahonnan szép kilátás nyílt a környező sziklahegyekre és Kununurra város völgyére.

Kiautóztunk dél felé a Zebra Rock galériába, ahol mindenféle ékszereket és dísztárgyakat árulnak, amik az errefelé található színes erezetű üledékes sziklából készültek. Elmentünk észak felé az Ivanhoe crossing-hoz, ahol a Wyndham-ba vezető régi főút keresztezi az Ord folyót egy gázlón. Négy éve le volt zárva a magas vízllás miatt, most nyitva volt, de most is elég sok víz folyt rajta keresztül jó gyorsan, nem láttunk senkit aki átment volna. De sokan járnak ide horgászni a folyó mindkét oldalán.

Péntek délután ingyenes szabadtéri előadás volt a kempingben. Egy szóló gitáros játszott és énekelt egy kis színpadon, közvetlenül a mi táborhelyünk előtt. Steve Case-nek hívták, jól énekelt és sok jó régi slágert játszott az 1960-70-es évekből, vegyesen rock és country dalokat, mint pl. a "House of the Rising Sun", "I'm a believer", "Helpless, helpless", és mások. Nagyon kellemes délután volt.

Vasárnap, június 12-én hagytuk el Kununurra-t, átléptünk a Northern Territory-ba, és 3 km-el a határ után befordultunk a Keep River nemzeti parkba. Ez egy viszonylag kisméretű (mindössze 700-valahány négyzetkilométer...) park a híres nagyokhoz képest, de a táj, a növényzet, a szikla-formák itt is olyan látványosak. A keleti oldalán a Victoria folyó sziklafala határolja, a nyugati fele még a Kimbeley régió homokkő-formáira emlékeztet. Egy 18 km-es jól karbantartott, viszonylag sima de jó poros földút vezetett föl a Gurrandalng nevű táborhelyre. Nagyon kellemes hely egy hatalmas sziklatömbbel a közepén.

Itt táboroztunk három napig, és végigjártuk a park összes túráit. Az első mindjárt erről a táborhelyről indul, egy 2 km-es körút érdekes homokkő képződmények és gyönyörű növényzet között.

Másnap reggel felkeltünk már 6 óra felé, még sötét volt (ahogy átjöttünk a Northern Territory-ba, vissza kellett állítani az órát másfél órával, ami azt jelenti, hogy itt 7 után kel fel a nap és este fél 7 körül lesz sötét), megreggeliztünk, és felautóztunk még 20 km-t a Janrem nevű táborhelyre. Innen indult egy 7 km-es körtúra, amiben volt egy kilátó pont és egy hely ahol ősrégi sziklarajzokat lehetett látni. A látvány a kilátó pontról valóban csodálatos volt a kora reggeli fényekben. Az okker-vörös sziklarajzok viszont közelébe sem jöttek azoknak amiket korábban a Kakadu NP-ben láttunk. De a táj és a változatos növényzet megérte a fáradságot, nagyon élvezetes túra volt.

Ma reggel a Jinumum túrát csináltuk, egy oda-vissza 3 km-es útvonalat a Keep folyó medre mentén egy szűk völgyben meredek sziklafalak között. Az út egy valamikori aboriginal táborhelyre vezetett amit az esős évszakban használtak. Egy kiugró sziklafal tövében van a táborhely, ahol méternyi vastagon lehet régi étkezések nyomati találni: kagylókat, csontokat, eszközöket. Néhány sziklában félgömbölyű bemélyedések vannak, ahol kölönféle magokat őröltek kenyér-sütés előtt. A sziklafalon itt is találtunk néhány okker-vörös rajzot.

Utána leautóztunk délre a Ginger domb-hoz, ahol egy érdekes kőépítmény látható. Állítólag errefelé több hasonló építményt találtak. Az információs tábla szerint ezekről a helyekről ragadozó madarakra vadásztak. 

Végül elsétáltunk a Cockatoo Lagoon mellett. Ebből általában nem szárad ki a víz a száraz évszakban sem, így sok vízimadár talál itt menedéket. Láttunk néhányat a vízi liliomok között, és még többet hallottunk a közelben. A lagüna körüli növényzet is gyönyörű dús, sok pandanus és kapok-fa látahtó az eukaliptuszok között.

Nagyon jól éreztük magunkat ebben a kis nemzeti parkban, és csodálkoztunk rajta, hogy miért nem olyan híres, mint a Bunge Bungles vagy a Kimberleys. Bármely más országban egy hatalmas turista-attrakció lehetne - ugyan azt egyáltalán nem bántuk, hogy itt most kevesen voltak...
