South Australia Tour - 1: From Sydney to Adelaide

More than 6 months have passed since our last caravan trip. Although we spent more than half of that time in Europe, travelling, sight-seeing, visiting family and friends, in the meantime we were already planning our next aussi adventure. Our target this time is South Australia, the famous wine regions, the capital Adelaide, and to top it off, Kangaroo Island. Due to some later commitments again we only have limited time, less than a month, but that should be enough for this trip.

After 3 days of intense preparations we left Sydney on Thursday, 19 October. In the morning we had an easy ride Southward on the Hume Hwy in sunny weather. After lunch it started to rain, first quietly, then heavily - which was good news for the agriculture, not as good for us. We spent the first night at a free campsite at Oura Beach along the Murrumbidgee river. We have been here several times before, a nice place even in the rain. But we were lucky again, the rain has ceased while we set up the caravan, and we still had time for a walk around the beach to visit our favourite giant tree with its huge root system visible in the banks of the river. Then it rained again till midnight but that did not bother us too much in the van.

Next morning (Friday, 20 Oct) we woke up to clear skies and continued Westward in sunny weather on the Sturt Hwy. This is the Riverina region, flat like a tabletop, important agricultural centre, large grain fields and paddocks with cattle and sheep. We went through this same road 4 years ago on the way to Mungo NP and the Flinders Ranges. We spent Friday evening at a new campsite beside Lake Benanee. Another nice spot, clear sunshine but strong cold wind from the South. The lake itself is no big deal, but we found flowering pepper trees along the shore and picked some red peppers from one. The night was pretty cold, only 9 degrees in the van in the morning.

On Satruday, 21 Oct, we only travelled the short distance to Mildura, a nice town straddling the Murray River, which is the border between Victoria and NSW. We had been here also earlier, but stopped for a rest in a caravan park. Did a walking tour of the city to appreciate the heritage and history of the town, did some shopping, then profited from the opportunity of having WiFi in the caravan park to have a chat on Skype with our daughter Eszter and the grand-kids.

Then we had to process all our fruits and vegetables, so that we can get into South Australia the next day. There are severe quarantine restrictions between the two states to protect growers from the fruit flies.

Sunday, 22 Oct. We passed through the quarantine inspection without problems and arrived to South Australia. Soon we reached Renmark, and spent the rest of the day and the night at a splendid free camp site beside one of the backwater channels of the Murray. Here the river meanders through the flat terrain, with many dead channels around. We have been here 4 years ago, but were happy to come back. We arrived early, found a good spot near the water. It was a nice sunny afternoon, most of the time we sat outside reading and relaxing at the water's edge.

The next two days we spent in the Barossa Valley, perhaps the most famous wine region of the country. We settled in the caravan park at Tanunda, the civic centre of the region. It was established by Prussian Lutheran immigrants in 1842, they started the wine industry soon after. The small rolling hills around are full of vineyards and plenty of cellars. The first afternoon we walked along the main street in Tanunda, did a tour near the township and paid a visit at the Jacob's Creek winery cellar - which, in fact, is not a cellar, but an elegant building with restaurant surrounded by flower gardens, terrace and parking... We tasted a few nice wines and of course we could not leave without taking a couple of bottles with us.

On Tuesday, 24 Oct, we made a bit longer tour around the region. We drove up to a small hill with a lookout to the surrounding vineyards. We planned to visit a few more cellars after lunch but it started raining, so we stayed in the van and waited for the rain to stop. It did not stop completely, but later we drove out to the mausoleum of the Seppelt family, a place we visited 21 years ago in January 1996 with our children. A double palm-alley is leading up to the building on top of a small hill with nice view of the surrounding vineyards - unfortunately it was not as enjoyable in the drizzle and cold wind as the first time.

Wednesday morning we packed up and continued to Adelaide.

Megint eltelt több mint 6 hónap a legutóbbi lakókocsis túránk óta. Ugyan ennek nagyobb részét, 3 és fél hónapot Euróbáan töltöttük, utazgatással és család-látogatással, de már eközben tervezgettük a következő "aussi"-kalandot. Uticélunk ezúttal Dél-Ausztrália, a híres borvidékek, a főváros, Adelaide, és egy kuriózum: a Kenguru Sziget. További már lekötött programok miatt megint behatárolt az időnk, kevesebb mint egy hónap, de erre az útra elég lesz.

Három napi készülődés után okt. 19.-én csütörtök reggel indultunk el. Délelőtt szép időben haladtunk dél felé a Hume autópályán. Délután sajnos elkezdett esni, sőt zuhogni, amire már nagy szükség volt, bár nem nekünk. Első este az Oura beach nevű szabad táborhelyen álltunk meg a Murrumbidgee folyó partján. Itt már többször jártunk, igen kellemes hely - még esőben is. De szerencsénk volt, épp egy kis szünet volt amíg felállítottuk a lakókocsit, mág egy rövid sétára is volt időnk utána, meglátogattuk kedvenc fa-óriásunkat az alámosott folyóparton. Aztán esett kb éjfélig, de az már nem zavart minket annyira.

Másnap (okt. 20) reggelre kitisztult, és szép napos időben haladtunk tovább nyugat felé a folyó közelében. Ez az ún. Riverina vidék, sík mint egy asztallap, fontos mezőgazdasági központ, óriási gabona-táblák és legelők között vezet az út (Sturt Hwy). Ez még mind ismert útvonal, jártunk már erre 4 éve mikor a Mungo NP-ba és a Flinders Ranges-hez mentünk. Péntek este legalább egy új táborhelyen álltunk meg, egy kis tó partján (Lake Benanee), ez is kellemes hely volt. Szép napsütés, csak erős, hideg szél. A tó mellett virágzó bors-fákat láttunk, szedtünk is egy kevés borsot az egyikről. Hajnalra jól lehűlt a levegő, csak 9 fok volt a lakókocsiban. Jól felöltöztünk, aztán reggeli után hamar tovább indultunk.

Szombaton (okt. 21) nem sokat jöttünk tovább, csak egy Mildura nevű kisvárosig a Murray folyó partján ami egyben az államhatár is Victoria és NSW között. Itt is jártunk már, de azért megálltunk egy kicsit pihenni, ezúttal egy kempingben. Kicsit vásároltunk, nézelődtünk a városban, aztán kihasználtuk az internet-lehetőségeket, beszéltünk Eszterrel, láttuk az unokákat is.

Aztán nekiálltunk feldolgozni az összes nálunk levő gyümölcsöt-zöldséget, mert másnap készültünk átmenni Dél-Ausztrláiába, és oda nem szabad semmi ilyesmit átvinni - félnek a kórokozóktól (valamilyen gyümülcsbe telepedő légy).

Táborhelyünk a holtág mellett

Vasárnap, okt. 22.-én sikeresen átmentünk a karantén-inspekción és átértünk Dél-Ausztráliába. Az éjszakát egy nagyon kellemes szabad kemping-helyen töltöttük a Renmark nevű kisváros mellett, a Murray folyó egyik holtágában. Itt is jártunk már 4 éve, de érdemes volt visszajönni. A Murray folyó itt vég nélül kanyarog össze-vissza a sík terepen, a vidék körös-körül tele van holt- vagy félholt folyóágakkal. Korán ideértünk, jó helyet találtunk a vízparton, kellemes meleg napos idő volt, délután kint üldögéltünk-olvastunk a lakókocsi mellett.

A következő két napot a Barossa völgyben töltöttük, ez talán az egész ország leghíresebb borvidéke. Egy Tanunda nevű kisváros a központja, itt laktunk a kempingben. Lutreánus porosz telepesek alapították 1842-ben, ők honosították meg a bortermelést. Szép dimbes-dombos környék, tele szőlő-ültetvényekkel, és persze borospincékkel. Első délután végigsétáltunk Tanunda főutcáján, és a környéken, meglátogattuk a Jacob's Creek borászat pincéjét - ami persze nem pince, hanem egy elegáns épület, körülötte nagy parkoló, virágos kert, kiülő terasz, étterem... Megkóstoltunk egy pár finom bort, és persze venni is kellett néhány üveggel.

Másnap (kedd, okt. 24.) délelőtt tettünk egy kicsit nagyobb körutat a borvidéken. Egy kis dombról szép kilátás nyílt a környező szőlő-ültetvényekre. Ebéd után még több pincészetet akartunk meglátogatni, de sajnos esett az eső, inkább a lakókocsiban olvastunk és vártuk hogy elálljon az eső. Mikor megenyhült, még elautóztunk a Seppelt-família családi kriptájához, ahol 21 éve, 1996 januárjában jártunk még a gyerekekkel együtt. Szép pálmasorokkal szegélyezett út vezet fel a dombon álló mauzóleumhoz. Sajnos a szemerkélő esőben, hűvös szélben nem volt olyan kellemes, mint első alkalommal.
