A lot happened since my last blog, but we did not have internet connection in the last 5 days. 

The first two days we spent around Gloucester, at the bottom of the Barrington Tops, our next main target.

Saturday (22 Feb) morning we drove up to Barrington Tops. The first part was easy, but followed by 40 kms of very steep dirt road, the last 20 km of which was in terrible conditions, full of pot-holes impossible to avoid. We were glad to have left the van down in the town. Barrington Tops National Park is part of the World Heritage listed East Australian Rainforests, it is a shame that this are is not better maintained. The "tops" are about 1350 m above sea level, and the weather has gradually changed as we climbe up. At the top we were in thick clouds, fog, rain and 13 degrees, visibility not more than 20-30 metres. We stopped at the Honeysuckle campground and walked along a 1 km loop track in an ancient Antarctic Beech forest. The vegetation was truly magnificient, worth the effort to drive up. We also saw quite a few animals while driving up, lirebirds, dingos. But the weather - and the road - was so unpleasant that we did not want to go any further.

On the way down we made a detour to the Copeland historic goldfields, where we had a picnic lunch and a walk around the valley to visit the remnants of the gold mining from the 1890s.

Sunday (23 Feb) morning we moved a bit further South, to the small privately owned Gloucester River caravan park, left the van there, and climbed up the Gloucester Tops, also part of the Barrington Tops NP. This was also at high altitude, 1200 m, but the gravel road was in better condition and the weather, although also quite cold, 13-14 degrees, was more agreeable. We did several short walks here, one again in an equally impressive Antarctic Beech forest, another to a lookout and a waterfall and one on the upper plateau of the Gloucester river, with interesting wetland vegetation.

On Monday (24 Feb) morning, coming out of the Gloucester River camping, we caught a glimpse of a platypus at one of the fords we had to cross. We went back to Gloucester to do some shopping and then continued North along the Thunderbolts Way, but only for about 30 kms, for our next stop at Woko National Park. There is a nice campground here along the Manning River, which turned out to be one of the most beuatiful camping grounds we have seen so far. The weather has also become very nice, warm but not hot, partly cloudy but enough sunshine. Very few people around this time, we had plenty of green grassy space around us that a group of cattle came to visit every day.

We spent two days and nights here, doing nothing much but enjoying the quiet atmosphere, the birds, the river. We did one walk up to the cliff face, about 4 km but 250 m up and down, it was enough activity for the 2 days. We even had a plunge in the river, which is quite shallow, no more than knee-deep, but clean and quite warm.

Wednesday (26 Feb) morning we left the Woko campground with very good memories, and continued our way up along the Thunderbolts Way. We stopped at Walcha, a small town of about 1800 people at 1050 m altitude, for lunch and a bit of shopping, then turned East on the Oxley Highway. Our next stop was about 40 kms from Walcha, at the Tia Falls. This is part of the Oxley Wild Rivers NP,a huge system of gorges and high waterfalls. We have not heard of this area before but we did not regret to come here. It is an amazing place. Here also there was a nicely maintained campground where we spent the next two nights, all alone. Wednesday afternoon we made the short walk to the Tia Falls and gorge lookouts. Although there was hardly any rain in the last few months and the vegetation around the area was pretty dry, there was some water falling still into the bottom of the gorge, about 200 m down.

On Thursday (27 Feb) we left the van at the Tia campground and went to visit Apsley Gorge, about 20 km back towards Walcha. This gorge is much larger and more popular and better developed than the Tia gorge. We walked around the rim of the gorge, visited all the various lookout points. The gorge is steep and dramatic, about 300 m deep, but unfortunately there was no water flowing into it right now. Still the views of the gorge and surrounding cliffs were breath-taking, well worth a visit even without the water. But we thought it would be worth coming back once in the wet season. Around noon we went back to the Tia campground and had a lazy afternoon (with a little rain) in and around the van.

Today, Friday (28 Feb), we came back through Walcha and arrived by noon to Tamworth, the country music capital of Australia. We will spend the next two nights here.

Jó sok minden történt az előző jelentkezésem óta, de öt napig nem volt internet kapcsolatunk. 

Az első pár napot Gloucester városka környékén töltöttük, a Barrington Tops Nemzeti Park közelében. Múlt szombaton, 22-én, felmentünk autóval a "tops"-ra, ami kb 1350 m magasban van. Az út elso fele elég könnyu volt, de utána kb 40 km nagyon meredek, keskeny, kanyargós földút következett, amibol a második 20 km nagyon rossz állapotban, tele hatalmas lukakkal, örültünk, hogy a lakókocsit lent hagytuk a városban. Ez a park is a Kelet-Ausztráliai Esoerdok Világ-örökség része, elég szégyen, hogy ennyire nem tartják karban. A klíma fokozatosan változott ahogy egyre feljebb értünk, a tetején teljesen benne voltunk a felhokben, csepergo esoben, ködben, 13 fokban, alig lehetett 20 m-re ellátni. Megálltunk az elso kemping-helynél, és bementünk az erdobe egy rövid sétára. A növényzet fantasztikus, osi Antarctic Beech (bükk) erdo, érdemes volt feljönni, minden nehézség ellenére. Elég sok állatot is láttunk útközben, de az ido és az út olyan rossz volt, hogy nem volt kedvünk továbbmenni, inkább visszafordultunk.
Lefelé jövet tettünk egy kitérot Copeland mellett egy völgyben, az 1890-es évekbeli aranybányászat megmaradt emlékeit néztük meg egy pár km-es sétával.
Vasárnap átköltöztünk egy kicsit délebbre a Gloucester River kempingbe, és onnan megint felmentünk a Gloucester Tops-ra. Ez is része a Barrington Tops nemzeti parknak, szintén jó magasan, 1200 m fölött, de az ido kicsit jobb volt mint szombaton és az út is jobb állapotban volt. Itt is tettünk néhány szép sétát, hasonló régi erdoségben, láttunk egy vízesést és a környéket egy kilátó-pontról.
A következo két napot a Woko nemzeti parkban töltöttük, kb 30 km-el északabbra Gloucestertol, az ún. Thunderbolt Highway mentén. Egy gyönyöru kis szabad kemping-hely van itt a Manning folyó partján, talán a legszebb hely ahol valaha kempingeztünk. Az ido is jóra fordult, kellemes meleg, kicsit felhos, de többnyire napsütés. Elég kevesen is járnak erre ilyenkor, jó sok helyünk volt, szép füves terület, a tehenek is minden nap körül-legeltek minket. Két napig jobbára csak pihentünk itt és élveztük ezt az idilli környezetet, még a patakban is fürödtünk egy jót, ugyan csak térdig ért a víz, de nagyon kellemes meleg és tiszta volt. Egyik délelott felmentünk a völgy oldalán a szikla-orom tövéig, egy kb 4 km-es gyalogút de 250 szintkülönbség, elég testgyakrolás volt a két napra. Szerda reggel szép emlékekkel mentünk tovább innen észak felé a Thunderbolt Highway mentén. Az út felkanyargott 1000 m fölé, Walcha városkánál megálttunk ebédelni, majd tovább kelet felé az Oxley Hwy mentén még 40 km-t a Tia Falls-hoz. Ez az Oxley Wild Rivers nemzeti park része, több meredek szuk katlan és magas vízesés is van itt. Korábban nem hallottunk errol, de érdemes volt eljönni, csodálatos vidék. A Tia Falls-nál egy kis elhagyott szabad kempinghelyen táboroztunk két napig. Szerda délután elsétáltunk a közeli vízeséshez és a szurdok-völgy kilátójához. A nagy szárazság ellenére itt még folyt valamennyi víz a vízesésbol, vagy 250 m mélységbe. Este nyílt tüzön sütögettük a vacsoránkat a lakókocsi mellett, kellemes este volt. 
Csütörtökön délelőtt elmentünk a másik közeli érdekességet, az Apsley Falls-t megnézni. Ez jóval nagyobb, látogatottabb és jobban kiépített mint a Tia Falls. Körülsétáltuk a szurdok peremét, végigjártuk az összes kilátó-pontot, minden oldalról megnéztük a völgyet és a vízesések - helyét, mert sajnos víz az most éppen nem folyt benne. Azért így is lélekzet-elállító a látvány, egyedülálló élmény. Talán még egyszer visszajövünk megnézni amikor víz is lesz benne. Délután visszamentünk Tia Falls-hoz, de elromlott az ido, csak pihentünk a lakókocsiban.
Ma, pénteken jöttünk tovább Walcha-n keresztül nyugat felé, déltájban érkeztünk Tamworth-be, country-zene ausztrál fővárosába. Most két napig itt maradunk, de erről majd a következo blog-ban olvashattok.
