We are travelling again! We left Sydney on Saturday, 15 February for a month-long trip of sight-seeing and rest. Our plan was to spend about a week somewhere on the coast enjoying the summer at the beach, before continuing inland towards Armidale along the Thunderbolt Way. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side this time.

We reached Seal Rocks by Saturday evening, and spent the night at the Yagon campground, a popular surfing and fishing spot in the Myall Lakes National Park. The campground is behind the dunes, with walk access to the beach, quite a long walk actually. Everything was wet and muddy, but quite warm, about 26 degrees and 80% humidity. In the morning we walked down to the beach to look around. A few brave people were snorkeling but no one else in the water. We thought it is not exactly the place we were dreaming about, so we moved on further North.

Our next stop was the Ruins camping ground in Booti Booti National Park, to the North of Pacific Palms. This campground is also just behind the dunes at the Southern end of Seven Mile beach. It is managed by NPWS, it even has hot showers, but no electricity for a relatively high daily fee. The beach is quite close and looks nice, but the water was not very inviting.

On Sunday afternoon we went for a walk along the shore of Wallis Lake, on the West side of the highway. A nice quiet lake with lots of pelicans. We were lucky to get back to the camp before a big storm came around 5 pm. The whole campground seemed under water by the end of the rain, but it quickly disappeared in the sandy soil. The air remained still quite warm but very humid.

On Monday we came up to this caravan park in Old Bar, near Taree. This is a very nice place, directly along the beach, with all the usual amenities - the only problem being that just the day before the water pipeline broke just outside the park, so there was no water, and they were not sure how long it would take to get it repaired. We decided to take the risk and set up camp at a nice place with direct ocean views. It turned out to be the right choice, as the water was back by early afternoon. Since then we enjoy this place as much as the weather permits, with some rain, some little sushine, warm (26-28) and very humid air. We walked along the beach, but did not feel like going into the water, the pool in the caravan park seemed a better choice.

Flying Foxes in Brush Reserve

 On Tuesday we went on a day trip following a 100 km tourist drive up to the mountains behind Taree. We stopped in Wingham to walk through the Brush Reserve along the Manning River, a small patch of original rainforest, where thousands of flying foxes nest and roost.

From then on we climbed up along a narrow winding but well maintained gravel road to about 1000 m elevation to the Tapin Tops National Park. We had a picnic lunch at the Dingo Tops Rest Area, a beautiful spot among the tall Californian Redwood trees.

We stopped at the Blue Knob lookout to enjoy the 360 view from 1100 m, then on the way back we saw Ellenborough Falls, the second tallest (200 m) waterfall in Australia. It was a long drive on gravel road but it was worth it.

Wednesday was quite sunny, it was good to rest in the shade. 


Today (Thursday), the weather is much worse again, raining most of the time. We stayed in the van mostly, I had some work to do and Kate enjoyed her book. Unfortunately it looks like the weather will stay the same for the next few days. We are not sure what to do, but probably will make a move tomorrow.

Megint utazunk! Múlt szombaton, feb. 15-én indultunk Sydneyből egy újabb egyhónapos túrára. Az volt a terv, hogy egy hetet töltünk valahol a tengerparton, élvezzük a nyár örömeit a vízparton, aztán bemegyünk a hegyek közé Armidale felé az ún. Thunderbolt Way útvonalon. Sajnos az időjárás eddig nem járt a kedvünben.

Szombat este elértünk Seal Rocks-ig, az éjszakát a Yagon nevű kempinghelyen töltöttük a Myall Lakes Nemzeti Parkban. Ez egy népszerű szörfölő- és horgászó hely a homokdűnék mögött. Le lehet gyalogolni a tengerpartra, de elég hosszú az út. Jó nedves, sáros volt minden de elég sokan voltak. Reggel lementünk megnézni a partot, egy pár bátor lélek búvárkodott, de a víz nem volt valami hívogató.

Vasárnap a következő állomásunk a Ruins kemping hely volt a Booti Booti Nemzeti Parkban, Pacific Palms-tól északra. Ez is közvetlenül a parti dombok mögött van, a Seven Mile beach déli végén. Kinéztünk itt is a partra, de nem volt kedvünk fürödni. Ugyan ez sem egy valódi kemping, a nemzeti park üzemelteti, de van melegvizes zuhany is, viszont áram az nincs, és ehhez képest elég drága. Az idő tövábbra is felhős, nagyon párás, de elég meleg volt. Délután elmentünk egy sétára az út belső oldalán a Wallis Lake partján. Ez az egész vidék tele van tavakkal, ez is egy szép nagy nyugodt tó, sok pelikán úszkált rajta. Éppen visszaértünk a kempingbe mielőtt egy nagy zápor jött, jól feláztatta az egész területet, de aztán hamar felszívta a homokos talaj.  

Hétfőn reggel továbbjöttünk egy Old Bar nevű kis településre, azóta itt vagyunk egy közvetlen tengerpati "valódi" kempingben, jól felszerelt és szépen karbantartott hely - csak éppen pont előző nap volt csőtörés, így víz nem volt amikor megérkeztünk. Azért mégiscsak ittmaradtunk, és szerencsénkre már koradélutánra megjavították a csövet, visszajött a víz. Szép helyet kaptunk, tengeri kilátásunk van a lakókocsinkból. Persze ilyenkor elég kevesen vannak itt, könnyebb jó heleyet kapni. Azóta élvezzük ezt a kellemes helyet, amennyire az idő engedi. Továbbra is felhős, esős, nagyon párás de elég meleg idő van, néha azért a nap is kisüt. Sétáltunk a vízparton is, de fürödni még mindig nem volt kedvünk.

Kedden elementünk egy egésznapos kirándulásra a part mögötti hegyekbe. Először egy Wingham nevű kisvárosban álltunk meg, végigsétáltunk a Brush Reserve-ben a Manning folyó partján, egy kis maradvány az ősrégi esőerdőből, ahol többezer "flying fox" (denevér-fajta) fészkel és zsivajog naphosszat. Onnan egy keskeny kanyargós földúton másztunk föl kb ezer m magasra a Tapin Tops Nemzeti parkba szép magas erdős hegyoldalak között. Egy Dingo Tops nevű helyen ebédeltünk nagyon szép környezetben, hatalmas kaliforniai vörösfenyők tövében. Délután a Blue Knob kilátóból néztük a panorámát, majd a visszaúton megálltunk az Ellenborough Falls-nál, ez a második legmagasabb vízesés Ausztráliában, kb 200 m-ről zuhog le a víz. Jó hosszú és fárasztó út volt, de sok szépet láttunk.

Szerdán kicsit sütött a nap is, kellemesebb idő volt, egész nap üldögéltünk az árnyékban a lakókocsi mellett. Mára megint elromlott az idő, elég sokat esett, borús, szeles, nem mentünk sehova. Nekem volt egy kis munkám, Kati meg olvasott. Sajnos úgy néz ki, hogy továbbra is ilyen marad az idő. Nehéz eldönteni hol volna jobb ilyen időben, de talán holnap továbbmegyünk innen.
