The Flinders Ranges

On Friday 18 Oct we left Broken Hill, and travelled all day up to the Flinders Ranges. Passing through to South Australia meant to eat or cook/feeze all our fruits and vegetables again, to satisfy the quarantine restrictions. Then we had to buy new provisions in Peterborough before going up to the Wilpena Pound Resort and Caravan Park. It is a very nice place spread out in a forested valley, the only entrance to the Pound itself.

We spent the weekend in and around the Pond. On Saturday it was very nice weather, sunny, 26-28 degrees. In the morning we went up to the Wangarra lookouts, a good half-day 8 km walk from the camp in beautiful scenery and nice views of the Pond.

On the way we passed through the remains of Hills Homestead, the home of a pioneer family trying to make a living here in the 1910s.

In late afternoon - after a refreshing plunge in the swimming pool of the resort - we visited the Sacred Canyon, just a few kms from the caravan park, a place we saw and enjoyed with our children 17 years ago, a 200 m narrow rocky valley with some ancient aboriginal carvings in the rocks.

We saw lots of emus and kangaroos along the way.

The other animal we saw lots of - more than we would have liked - are the flies, an essential and unavoidable part of the Australian Outback. The only way to survive them is to use the fly-net. Fortunately we were well prepared.





Sunday was a very hot day, up to 40 degrees early afternoon. We thought the best place to be on such a day will be in our air-conditioned car, so we went on a driving tour around the Ranges.

We went through several gorges, stopping at various lookout points and information displays. The landscape is very varied with lush vegetation, sometimes reminiscent of the high Alps. It was enjoyable despite the heat. 

Blinman

We drove up to Blinman, a little village about 20 km NE of the park, just for a glimpse of the area and village life. We had our picnic lunch and coffee sitting in the car enjoying the scenery and the relative coolness inside as there was 40 degrees outside.

After lunch we drove to Parachilna for another nostalgic visit to the Prairie Hotel that we saw in 1986 with our children. But before getting there, just a few hundred metres from the hotel, one of the back tyres of our car blew up. Our car is quite big and heavy, we never had a flat tyre before, so to change the tyre would have been a challenging task in any case, but in 40 degree heat it was even more difficult. Fortunately two friendly aussi blokes came to our rescue and with their help we managed to get it done. Afterwards we had a well-earned cool drink and a good chat with them and their wives/partners at the Prairie Hotel.

From there, we got back to the camp at the shortest possible route - it was not a good feeling to travel without a spare tyre, but fortunately there were no further problems. 
Monday morning we came down to Hawker, about 60 km South of the Ranges, the closest place to get our tyre fixed. Unfortunately it turned out that it cannot be fixed, and they did not have the right size in stock. So today we are stuck here, waiting for the tyre to arrive, hopefully tomorrow morning. We booked in to a caravan park, and spent the day resting, mostly in and around the pool, again in 35 degree heat.

 But the change in coming, a little rain and cooler weather are forecast for the next few days.

Pénteken egész nap utaztunk Broken Hill-tol a Flinders Ranges-ig. A Dél-Ausztráliai határon nem szabad átvinni semmi zöldséget-gyümölcsöt, úgyhogy elotte mindent meg kellett enni vagy megfozni-lefagyasztani, aztán a határ után ujra feltölteni a készleteinket. A Wilpena Pound Resort kempingben szálltunk meg 3 éjszakára. Jártunk már erre 17 éve a gyerekekkel együtt, de ez a kemping és üdülo-telep azóta épült. Nagyon kellemes, jól felszerelt, szép fás környezetben. 
Szombaton nagyon kellemes nyári de nem túl meleg ido volt amit jól kihasználtunk. Délelott egy félnapos gyalogtúrát tettünk a Wangarra kilátóhoz, ahonnan szép ki- illetve be-látás van a Pound zárt ovális völgyteknojébe, no meg kifele is körös-körül. Útközben elmentünk a Hills Homestead romjai mellett, az 1900-as évek elején próbált itt megélni-gazdálkodni egy család, nem sok sikerrel. Estefelé elmentünk a Sacred Canyon-ba, ahol 17 éve a gyerekekkel is jártunk, egy rövid szurdok-völgy nagyon érdekes sziklafalak között, itt-ott régi aboriginal vésetek is láthatóak benne. Útközben rengeteg emut és kengurut láttunk egész közelrol. 
Vasárnapra nagy meleget jósoltak, ami be is vált. Úgy gondoltuk, ilyen idoben a legkellemesebb hely a légkondicionált autóban lesz, ezért elmentünk egy egésznapos túrára a park távolabbi részeire. Sok szép hegyen-völgyön autóztunk keresztül, több helyen megálltunk rövid idore kilátó-pontokon. Felmentünk Blinman-ba, egy kis falu 20 km északra, majd onnan Parachilna-ba ahol már szintén jártunk a gyerekekkel. Sajos épp mielott odaértünk, kaptunk egy durr-defektet a jobb hátsó keréken. Az autónk jó nagy és nehéz, eddig még soha nem volt vele defektünk, a kerékcsere bármikor nagy megpróbáltatás lett volna, de 40 fokos melegben még nehezebb volt. Szerencsénkre két barátságos aussi "bloke" (fickó) megállt és segített, így együttes erovel csak sikerült kicserélni a kereket. Aztán velük együtt mentünk a Prairie Hotel-ba egy jól megérdemelt italra és egy kis beszélgetésre. Onnan aztán siettünk vissza a kempingbe a legrövidebb úton, nem jó érzés pótkerék nélkül elhagyott tájakon autózni, de szerencsére nem volt több baj.
Ma reggel lejöttünk Hawker-be, a legközelebbi városkába ahol a kereket meg lehet javíttatni. Persze hamar kiderült, hogy ezt a kereket már csak eldobni lehet, és másik megfelelo méret nem volt raktáron, úgyhogy meg kellett rendelni Adelaide-bol, így most itt kellett maradnunk, remélve hogy holnapra megjön. Megszálltunk egy kempingben, és a napot pihenéssel töltöttük, többnyire a vízmedencében és mellette, megintcsak 35 fokos hoségben. Bent a lakókocsiban még melegebb van, de kint meg a legyektol nincs nyugta az embernek, csak védohálóval lehet kibírni.
