Bottle trees in Roma

Tuesday, 2 Oct, Roma - We left Carnarvon Gorge in the morning and travelled to Roma, about 240 km South. It is a nice little town, the main streets aligned with majestic bottle trees. It is where gas and oil production began in Australia and the history of these are presented here in the Big Rig Information centre. 
In the afternoon we had a tyre puncture fixed, the first one on this round trip, but one that has been bothering us for a few weeks now, the tyre losing pressure slowly over a couple of days. We also did some shopping and benefitted from the good mobile reception to upload the next page to the blog.

Cobb & Co Museum, Surat

Thursday, 4 Oct, St George - We came down here yesterday morning, and had two quiet days in a good caravan park, mostly doing nothing, just resting, reading, enjoying the nice weather. On the way we stopped at Surat, to visit the Cobb and Co museum, at the site of the old station where they changed horses. A well presented impressive collection.

The Balonne River, St George

St George is a pretty little town at the side of the Balonne River, a much wider river than any other we have seen so far, with a lot of water in it. It's not by chance that this town is "the inland fishing capital of Australia". We tried to find some local fish, but there is none for sale. We would have to catch it ourselves if we want some; unfortunately I am no fisherman. It is spring time here, we saw lots of blooming trees and colourful wildflowers along the roadsides.

Another curiosity of St George is a collection of finely carved emu eggs, made by a local resident of Greek origine over a period of 35 years. 

Friday, 5 Oct, Lightning Ridge - We came down another 230 kms, and crossed back to NSW today. We saw lots of emus on the way, some grazing very close to the road, a male with two chicks, many others behind a fence. 

A local "residence"

Lightning Ridge is another opal mining tour, famous for the "black opal" that only occurs here. We will go on a mine tour tomorrow. Today it was another very hot day, 35 degrees so we did not do much, apart from a short ride around town, a visit at the "Australian Opal Centre" with an interesting collection of opalised fossils, shells, plant fragments, dinosaur bones, etc., and a quick stop at the artesian hot baths just beside our caravan park. The water in the bath is too hot now to be inviting, around 41 degrees, but it might be a good attraction at winter time.

Saturday, 6 Oct, Ligthening Ridge - Today, despite the forecast, it was even hotter than the day before, with strong wind gushes. In the morning we went on an opal tour. We were taken just outside town to the opal fields, that are quite different from what we saw in Coober Pedy, much more vegetation, and the wholes are covered and fenced as prescribed by legislation. But this area is just as full of strange, unique characters and their "creations" as back there. We saw 

Fred Bodel's place

- Fred Bodel's place, the oldest miners' camp around here from 1901. 

Amigo's Castle

- Amigo's Castle, a "one-man's dream", an unfinished residence built from stone and concrete over 25 years.

The Astronomers' Monument

- the Astronomers' Monument, another unfinished construction built by a Polish immigrant to commemorate the famous Polish astronomer Copernicus and others.

Noodling

- the open-cut mine at Lunatic Hill, where we tried our hands in "noodling", that is fossicking for opals in the left-over dirt, without success
We also had a morning tea with introduction to black opal and demonstration of opal cutting and polishing. It was an interesting tour with a friendly and enjoyable guide.

In the afternoon we went down to another abandoned mine 15 m underground, where one other unique character, Ron Canlin, has created 500-plus carvings in the sandstone walls of the mine shafts.

Ron started carving 25 years ago, still working with marvelous energy, and his style and ability has significantly changed and improved over the years. An amazing cavalcade of figures, humans and animals, from mythology, films, books, tales, politics and religion. 

But we know who this is...

The Last Supper

Sunday, 7 Oct, Lightning Ridge - The temperature has suddenly dropped today, the max no more than 19 degrees, finally a comfortable day in the sunshine. Early morning we plunged into the artesian bore bath, just outside our caravan park. It was nice to soak in the hot (41 degrees) water in the cool morning air for a while but not for too long. It is said to do good to our ailing bones and joints.

Later in the morning we went to check out the Sunday Market. Lots of cheap opal fragments and second-hand books on offer. No big deal but an interesting atmosphere. 
Then we visited the John Murray Gallery, a collection from a local artist. He moved up from Sydney 25 years ago, and spent his time painting the Australian Outback with his quite unique characteristic style that we liked a lot, we ended up buying two small prints. Some of his political caricatures are well known from the Sydney papers.

The rest of the day we spent in the van relaxing and working on the blog.

Múlt kedden indultunk tovább Carnarvon Gorge-ból, és pénteken értünk vissza NSW államba, azóta Lightning Ridge-ben vagyunk. Útközben egy éjszakát Roma-ban töltöttünk, ahol meg kellett javíttatni egy kereket, ami már hetek óta lassan de biztosan engedett a nyomásból. Kiderült, hogy egy nagy vastag fúrófej állt benne, de szerencsére nem nekem kellett lecserélni.
Aztán két napot St George-ben voltunk, foleg csak pihenni és mert olyan kellemes kis város volt, jól éreztük magunkat. Semmi különös látnivaló, csak egy helyes csöndes kis település egy elég nagy folyó, a Balonne, partján, szép parti sétánnyal és virágzó fasorokkal. Ja és egy érdekesség: egy több mint száz darabból álló "faragott" (carved) emu-tojás gyujtemény, egy görög származású helyi muvész alkotásai, nagyon érdekes és látványos darabok, állítólag világraszólóan egyedi kollekció.
Lightning Ridge is az opál-bányászatról híres, mint Coober Pedy Dél-Ausztráliában ahol egy hónapja jártunk. Itt található egyedül a "fekete opál", ami még különlegesebb, mint a többi (de ez is olyan sokszínu, csak a hátsó rétege fekete, amitol a színek még élénkebbek). Nagyon sok opálosodott fosszilt is találtak, dinoszaurusz, és mindenféle tengeri állatok csontjait meg kagylókat, ezek bemutatására épül most itt az Ausztralian Opal Centre, de most is van egy kis bemutató termük a központban amit megnéztünk. 
Szombaton voltunk egy túravezetésen, körbevittek a környék érdekességein. Itt is sok különleges karakter gyult össze az évek folyamán, akik a kincskeresésbe belefáradva, vagy amellett melléktevékenységként mindenféle más fantasztikus "alkotást" hoztak létre, ezekbol láttunk egy párat, (Amigo's Castle, Astronomer's Monument). Az elso opál-bányász (Fred Bodel) maga-építette kunyhóját, meg egy felhagyott felszíni bányát (Lunatic Hill), ahol mi is megpróbáltunk opált keresni az ottmaradt meddohegyen, állítólag lehet találni kisebb darabokat, de nekünk nem sikerült. Megmutatták azt is ahogy vágják meg csiszolják az opált.
Délután meg egy másik unatkozó bányász alkotásait náztük meg egy felhagyott bánya földalatti folyosóin: vagy 500 szobor/dombormu a homokko falakba faragva, egy fantasztikus kavalkád, emberi és állati figurák, bibliai, mitológiai, mese és film-alakok, egyházi és politikai karikatúrák. 25 év óta csinálja, még most is, és idoközben nagyon sokat fejlodött a stílusa.  
Vasárnap reggel megmártóztunk a másik helybeli nevezetesség, az artézi fürdo jó meleg vizében. Több mint egy km mélyrol jön föl, 41 fokos, és állítólag jót tesz a csontoknak meg ízületeknek. Mindenesetre jól esett kicsit ázni a melegvízben a reggeli hus levegoben. 
Délelott végigsétáltunk a vasárnapi piac standjai között, sok olcsó opál-maradék, ami már nemigen haszálható ékszernek, meg rengeteg használt könyv volt a kínálat. Elmentünk egy helyi festo, John Murray, galériájába. 25 éve költözött ide Sydney-bol, azóta leginkább az ausztrál "outback" tájait festi, nagyon érdekes egyéni stílusban, nekünk nagyon tetszett, vettünk is két kis képet.
