South Coast Tour

There have been a lot of changes since we were on the road last year. First, we had our second grandchild, a little girl called Rubi Klementina, born in August 2016. Second, I have finally fully retired from work at the end of the year. Third, we bought a new car in December 2016. We loved our old Disco very much, but it was more than 11 years old, and we started to get worried if it can still be trusted to do the job without major breakdowns. So we swapped it for a newer version of the same model. It's not exactly a new car, but only 2 years old with less than 10k-s in it, so it should be a very good car for a long time.

Our caravan was sitting in front of the house for 6 months and we were itching to get going again. But we don't have much time. We have several events booked from the end of February, then possible work commitments in March-April (despite retirement), and we plan to go overseas for the European summer. So we only had about two weeks for a trip in February. 

We left home on Monday, 6 Feb 2017. It was not an easy start. In Sydney it was 34 degrees and very humid, not ideal for packing up. I managed to hurt my left forefinger in the process. Then, when everything was ready and we were about to leave, we checked the light connections to the van as usual, and found the right indicator not working. This was not a total surprise, because this indicator has been half filled with rainwater in the last 3 years. Fortunately, for this reason we have ordered and received a spare set long ago. Changing the indicator in the back of the caravan is not an easy thing, but Kati managed to do it. 

We got away on the second attempt. The highway was very busy and the weather was still very hot when we stopped for lunch at a roadside rest area before Ulladulla. It was so hot and humid that rather than making our own coffee in the caravan, we went to an airconditioned cafe in Ulladulla to cool down a bit. 

But it cooled down quickly in the afternoon, and started raining. By the time we arrived at our first evening destination, Congo Point, it stopped raining but it was only 21 degrees. We had been at this camping ground several times before, it is a nice place managed by the national parks. We set up the van under a huge pine tree, and went for a walk along the creek and the beach.

Tuesday, 7 Feb, it was raining again. We packed up and continued South in the rain. We

reached Eden by late lunchtime, and decided to stay there for the night. After a late lunch and a short siesta, we went for a drive around town. The rain has stopped but it remained a cool and cloudy afternoon. We had been here in 2010 with our friends, but it's a nice place to look around. There is a nice lookout to the waters of Twofold Bay. The Seamen's Memorial near the lookout commemorates the sailors who were lost at sea and never returned. The Mary MacKillop Hall is an old church building converted to school by Mother Mary MacKillop, Australia's first canonized saint.

Wednesday, 8 Feb. A cloudy day but no rain. We left Eden and soon passed the Victorian border. Not much traffic on the highway, but the road is like a rollercoaster, up one hill, down the next valley, quite stressing with a car towing a 2.5 ton caravan. We arrived to Mallacoota around midday. This was our main destination for this trip. It was recommended by our daughter who came here to collect little snails (gastropods) on the beach for her thesis, and she liked it a lot.

Mallacoota is a small town, less than a thousand population, but it is a major holiday destination. The town centre is built on a headland and the biggest caravan park on the Southern hemisphere surrounds the town centre all along around the water's edge. It has more than 800 sites. We did not make a booking in advance, thinking that surely we must be able to get a site in such a huge park. On arrival we got a bit worried, as the park seemed to be completely full. But there was no problem, we got our place. We booked for 3 nights, thinking that we can extend it later if we want to stay longer.

In the afternoon we went for a walk around the camp. The town is surrounded by the inlet, a wast body of shallow water behind a long and wide sand bar, with a narrow shifting entrance to the ocean. It's called Bottom Lake, followed inwards by the Top Lake. It's an ideal place for boat people and recreational fisherman.

During the night the wind became very strong, continuously battering our awning. We had to get up after midnight and pull it back to avoid any damage.

Quarry Beach

Thursday, 9 Feb. The wind died down and we woke up for a sunny, hot and very humid day. After breakfast we drove out South along the coast. We stopped at Quarry Beach with its coloured layers of marine sandstone sediments. Further South we climbed down to Secret Beach where one can get into a half under-water cave, but we found it almost completely filled with sand. Then we came back to Betka Beach, suggested as a nice place to rest and swim. By that time it was very hot, about 36 degrees, combined with above 80% humidity. We stayed there for the rest of the morning behind the beach in the shade of a big tree. Even in the shade it was not very comfy. I went for a drip in the water a few times, but the water was very far, I was hot and dry again by the time I went back.

After lunch in our van, to escape from the heat we went for coffee in an air-conditioned cafe in the twon centre, and stayed there until closing time.

Friday, 10 Feb. An overcast, cool and sometimes rainy, but still very humid day. In the morning we went for a walk along the shore of Bottom Lake, across the "Narrows" connecting it to the Top Lake. An easy walking track through thick eucalyptus bushland, with nice views of the two lakes. Plenty of small boats and fishermen on the water. 

In the afternoon we joined a 2-hour boat tour starting from Mallacoota wharf. It went up to the Top Lake and back. It was a pleasant tour although we did not see anything particularly interesting, apart from a sea eagle catching a dead fish dropped in the water by our captain. The captain told a lot of information and stories about the area and its residents. A pity we only caught about half of what he said.

In the evening we joined a group of fellow Eco tourers for a cup of tea. They were two couples of retired primary school teachers, friends and colleagues for about 50 years. They told us some interessting stories about a project one of them is working in India run by their Rotary Club. We had a nice chat long into the dark night.

Saturday, 11 Feb. We wanted to extend our stay, but it turned out there were no powered sites available for the weekend. We could get an unpowered site very close to our van, but it meant that in the morning we had to move to that site. It took a while as there was somebody else on that site. We had to wait until they left, then we moved in.

It was again a nice sunny warm day, not as hot as before. We went to Bastion Point, a little South from the camping, with a boat ramp outside the inlet. We watched for a while the docking and undocking of the boats. There was a small somewhat protected beach beside the boat ramp. We settled down there for the morning, had a few swims and enjoyed the nice weather.

In the afternoon we had another walk around the camp along the water. We saw a seal in the Boat harbour who probably got lost in the shallow water of the inlet and could not find the way out. 

Sunday, 12 Feb. Another cool and rainy day, as forecast, so we decided to leave and start our way back North. We had to pack up in the rain and there were a few heavy showers during the drive. We reached Merimbula by around 1pm and got a place in the Sapphire Valley caravan park. 

The weather was still rainy and overcast so we did not go anywhere in the afternoon apart from a quick shopping trip to replenish our supplies. 

By the evening the clouds disappeared and we had a very cold night, only 7 degrees in the van next morning.

Monday, 13 Feb. A bright, sunny day, cold first but warming up quickly. In the morning we went for a walk along the water. Merimbula also has a vast inlet called Top Lake, and a nice boardwalk along the shore. We have done this walk in 2010 when we were here for a week with our friends, but it was good to do it again. It is about 2 km long and there is a cafe at the outer end. We could not resist having a coffee before returning.

Then we drove out to Mitchies Jetty, which is just behind the sand dunes of Main Beach, on the foreshore of Merimbula Lake. Had a swim in the clear and quiet water, quite cold but refreshing. 

Back in the caravan park we also tried the swimming pool and the spa, before lunch and another coffee in our van. 

In the afternoon we had a walk around the town centre, then drove out to the Northern side of the lake. At Bar Beach, just beside the entrance to the lake there is another sheltered beach. We enjoyed another swim here. The tide was ebbing out of the lake, there were very strong currents going out and turning back closer to the shore, but it seemed safe enough if one watched carefully which way it went.

Tuesday, 14 Feb. The weather turned cloudy again but otherwise not too bad. We left Merimbula and continued North along the Sapphire Coast drive, through Tathra. It was much quieter than the Princess Highway, nice countryside but still continuously undulating terrain. We stopped in Bermagui and had a walk out to the cliff edge to look at the rugged rocks running out into the ocean.

We went on Northbound and reached Depot Beach, our next destination, around late lunchtime. Depot Beach campground is in Murramarang National Park, right by the beach in a tall spotted gum forest. We had been here exactly a year ago and enjoyed it very much. It was good to come back to this wonderful place.

It took a while to set up our van, and we had a very late lunch. In the afternoon we had a short walk down the beach.

Wednesday to Friday, 15-18 Feb. Finally we had 3 consecutive nice days, warm but not too hot, sunny and not too humid. We spent each morning on the beach, just sitting under the umbrella, watching the birds, reading, having a swim in the clear water, enjoying the environment. We also enjoyed the solitude, only a few other people on the beach, well far away from us.

In the afternoon we stayed at out caravan sitting under the awning, watching the many different birds and the kangaroos freely grazing close to us. A perfect summer holiday.

Friday morning we got up at 6am and walked out to the Southern tip of the beach to catch the sunrise. It came out of the ocean around 6.25 in between thick gray clouds, a beautiful view.

Saturday 19 Feb. We knew it is going to be a rainy day, followed by a few more rainy days, so we thought there is no point staying any longer. As we knew the rain is coming, we already packed up everything outside the van the evening before. We left the campground in drizzling rain, then we had a few very heavy showers on the way, but by the time we arrived home around lunchtime, the sun was out again and the weather was nice.

So that was our short tour to the South Coast, cut a bit shorter than planned. The weather was far from ideal, very vaariable, one hot day followed by one cloudy or rainy and cool. Another disappointment was to find that our new car consumes about 1 litre more than the old one when towing. It does not feel right, but maybe it can be rectified later. Other than that, we enjoyed again living in our caravan, and looking forward to the next trip.

Sokminden megváltozott a tavalyi utolsó utunk óta. 2016 augusztusban megszületett a második unokánk, egy kislány, Rubi Klementina. Én végleg nyugdíjba mentem az év végén. És vettünk egy új autót 2016 decemberben. Nagyon szerettük a régi autónkat, de már elmút 11 éves, és egyre jobban aggódtunk, hogy megússzuk-e a következő utat nagyobb baj nélkül. Becseréltük egy újabb modellre. Nem igazán új autó, de csak 2 éves és csak 8-ezer km van  benne. Remélhetőleg ez most sokáig egy jó autó lesz.

Több mint 6 hónapja nem utaztunk a lakókocsival, de most sincs túl sok időnk. Február végétől több koncert- és szinház-jegy és baráti látogatás vár ránk, aztán márciustól ujabb munka-lehetőségre számíthatok (nyugdíjasként is lehet dolgozni...), májusban meg európai utazást terveztünk az ottani nyárra. Úgyhogy csak két hetünk volt egy februári túrára.

Hétfőn, feb. 6.-án indultunk otthonról. Nem volt könnyű az indulás. Sydney-ben 34 fok volt és nagyon párás, nem éppen ideális a pakoláshoz. Közben sikerült jól megsebeznem a bal mutatóujjamat. Aztán mikor minden kész volt és indultunk volna, szokás szerint ellenőriztük a lakókocsi lámpáit, és kiderült, hogy a jobb index-lámpa nem ég. Ez nem volt nagy meglepetés, mert ez a búra már 3 éve félig tele volt esővízzel. Szerencsére emiatt már régen megrendeltünk es meg is kaptunk egy másikat. Csak ki kellett cserélni, de az sem egy könnyű dolog a lakókocsiban, főleg sebes, kötözött ujjal. Szerencsére Katinak sikerült betenni.

Második kísérletre sikerült elindulni. Az orságúton jó nagy forgalom volt, és nagy forróság mikor megálltunk egy útmenti pihenőben ebédelni. Olyan meleg volt a lakókocsiban, hogy utána inkább bementünk egy hűtött kávéházba kávézni hogy lehűljünk egy kicsit.

Délután hamarosan megváltozott az idő, gyorsan lehűlt és esni kezdett. Mire megérkeztünk az első éjszakai szállásunkra, elállt az eső, de csak 21 fok volt. Már többször voltunk ezen a Congo Point táborhelyen, szeretjük ezt a helyet. Nem egy kemping, a nemzeti park felügyelete alatt működik, nincs áram meg zuhany, de közvetlenül a tengerparton van, szép helyen. Egy nagy fenyűfa alatt táboroztunk le, és sétáltunk egyet a tengerparton.

Mindent elborít a "morning glory"

Feb. 7, kedd. Reggel megint esett az eső mikor felpakoltunk és tovább indultunk dél felé. Késő dél-tájban értünk Eden-be, ottmaradtunk éjszakára. Megebédeltünk, pihentünk egy keveset, aztán körbeautóztuk a várost. Jártunk már itt 2010-ben a barátainkkal, de ez is kellemes hely, jó volt ujra látni. Van egy szép kilátó pont a tengeröbölre (Twofold bay), közvetlenül mögötte a Tengerészek emlékműve (Seamen's Memorial), a tengerbe veszett hajósok emlékére. Van egy régi templom épületből átalakított iskola, amit Mother Mary MacKillop, az első szentté avatott ausztrál apáca alapított.

Feb. 8, szerda. Borús idő de nem esik. Nem sokkal Eden után átléptünk Victoria államba. Kicsi a forgalom, de az út mint egy hullámvasút, hegyre föl, völgybe le, jól igénybe veszi az autót a lakókocsival. 

Déltájban beértünk Mallacoota-ba. Ez volt az utunk fő célja. Lányunk ajánlotta, aki itt is járt apró tengerparti csigákat (gastropods) gyűjteni amikor a szakdolgozatát csinálta.

Mallacoota egy kis város, kevesebb mint ezer lakosa van, de hatalmas a turista-forgalma. A városközpont egy földnyelven épült, és a déli földrész legnagyobb kempingje veszi körül a vízpart mentén. Több mint 800 sátor és lakókocsi fér el benne. Nem foglaltunk előre helyet, remélve hogy biztos kapunk helyet egy ekkora kempingben. Kicsit megijedtünk amikor odaértünk, mert úgy nézett ki, teljesen tele van. De végül nem volt gond, kaptunk helyet. Három éjszakát fizettünk, azzal, hogy majd meghosszabbítjuk később ha akarjuk.

Délután körbesétáltuk a kempinget. A földnyelvet egy hatalmas sekély belső tó veszi körül, amit egy keskeny homokpad választ el a tengertől. A szűk bejárat helyét és mélységét állandóan változtatja a ki-be járó ár-apály. Ez az Alsó tó (Bottom Lake), beljebb van egy Felső tó, egy szűk csatornával (the Narrows) elválasztva. Ideális hely csónakos és horgász nyaralóknak.

Éjszaka feltámadt a szél, egyre erősebb lett, egyfolytában csattogott a lakókocsink előtetőjén. Éjfél után fel kellett kelnünk hogy becsukjuk, nem akartuk hogy letépje a szél.

Quarry Beach

Feb. 9, csütörtök. Reggelre elállt a szél, és szép napos meleg, de nagyon párás reggelre ébredtünk. Reggeli után elautóztunk dél felé a tengerparton. Megnéztük a Quarry Beach-et (Kőbánya), ahol a tengeri üledékes kőzet fantasztikus szines rétegekben rakódott le. Tovább dél felé lemásztunk a Secret (Titkos) Beach-hez, ahol egy félig vízalatti barlangot emlegettek. Mint kiderült, majdnem teljesen betemette a homok. 

Aztán  visszajöttünk a Betka Beach-hez, azt ajánlották ott jól lehet pihenni és fürödni. Ekkor már nagyon meleg volt, kb. 36 fok és 80% fölötti páratartalom. A délelőtt többi részét ott töltöttük a part mögötti fák árnyékában, de még az árnyékban is túl meleg volt. Többször bementem fürdeni, de nagyon messze kellett gyalogolni a vízhez, mire visszaértem, már megint izzadtam.

Megebédeltünk a lakókocsiban, de olyan kellemetlen meleg volt, hogy kávézni inkább elmentünk a városba egy hűtött kávézóba, és ott maradtunk zárásig.

Gyalogtúrán

Feb. 10, péntek. Borús, hűvösebb idő, néha csöpörgő eső, de megint nagyon párás. Délelőtt csináltunk egy gyalogtúrát a Bottom Lake és a Narrows partja mentén. Elég könnyű út volt, sűrű eukaliptusz erdőn keresztül, szép kilátással a két tó felé. Sok kis motorcsónak és horgász volt a vizen.

Délután befizettünk egy kétórás hajótúrára, ami a városi kikötőből felvitt a Narrows-n keresztül a Top Lake-be és vissza. Kellemes túra volt, ugyan sok érdekeset nem láttunk, egyedül egy hatalmas tengeri sast, amint felkapott egy döglött halat a hajó mellől, amit a kapitányunk dobott be neki. A kapitány sok érdekeset mesélt a városról meg a környékről, sajnos csak a felét értettük.

Este meghívott minket egy teára egy házaspár aki ugyanolyan lakókocsival utazott mint mi. Velük volt még egy házaspár, mindannyian nyugdíjas ált. iskolai tanárok, és ötven éve barátok és kollégák. Sok érdekeset meséltek, egyikük részt vett egy humanitárius projektben Indiában, amit a Rotary klubjuk szervezett. Mi is meséltünk magunkról, jó sokáig beszélgettünk a sötétben.

Feb. 11, szombat. Tovább akartunk volna maradni, de kiderült, hogy a hétvégére nincs több "powered site" (ahol a lakókocsit rá tudjuk kapcsolni az áramra). Kaptunk egy "unpowered" helyet ami közel volt az addigi helyünkhöz, de reggel át kellett költöznünk oda. Ahhoz viszon előbb meg kellett várnunk, amíg az előző lakó eltakarodik onnan.

Megint egy szép napos meleg nap volt, de nem olyan hőség mint csütörtökön. Kimentünk a Bastion Point-hoz, közel a kempinghez dél felé, már a szabad tegnerparti részen ahol egy csónak-leeresztő rámpa van. Egy ideig figyeltük ahogy a csónakokat beeresztik meg kihúzzák. A rámpa mellett volt egy kis viszonylag védett homokos tengerpart, ott töltöttük a délelőttöt. Jól lehetett fürdeni, finom volt a víz.

Délután megint sétáltunk egyet a kemping és a város körül. A kikötő mellett láttunk egy fókát, ami meglepő volt. Valószínűleg eltévedt a sekély vízben és nem találta a kivezető utat.

Feb. 12, vasárnap. Megint egy hűvös, esős nap, és az előrejelzés szerint további esős napok várhatóak. Úgy döntöttünk hogy nem maradunk tovább, elindulunk vissza észak felé. Esőben kellett felpakolni és útközben is volt egy pár nagy zápor. Délután 1 óra felé értünk Merimbula-ba, letáboroztunk a Sapphire Valley kempingben.

Délután sem javult sokat az idő, nem mentünk sehova, csak bevásárolni.

Este lassan eltűntek a felhők, és éjszaka teljes holdfény lett, szokatlanul hideg éjszaka. Reggel csak 7 fok volt a lakókocsiban.

Séta a tóparton

Feb. 13, hétfő. Tiszta napfényes idő, reggel jó hideg, de hamar felmelegedett. Reggeli után elmentünk sétálni a tó partján. Merimbula is egy nagy belső tó mellett fekszik, annak a partján vezet egy fapallókból épített gyalogút. Egyszer már végigjártuk 2010-ben amikor itt nyaraltunk a barátainkkal, de jól esett ujra megtenni. Kb. 2 km hosszú, a másik végén vagy egy kis kávézó, ott megpihentünk egy kávéra mielőtt visszafordultunk.

Aztán kimentünk autóval a Mitchies Jetty-hez, ami közvetlenül a tengerparti homokdombok mögött van a belső tó partján, nem messze a bejárattól. fürödtünk egy jót a finom hideg, frissítő tiszta nyugodt vízben.

Ebéd előtt a kempingben is kipróbáltuk a fedett úszómedencét és mellette a spa-t, az is finom volt.

Délután sétáltunk a városközpontban, majd kiautóztunk a tó északi oldalára. Ott van a Bar Beach, egy védett homokos partszakasz közvetlenül a tó bejárata mellett. Itt is jó fürödtünk. Apály volt éppen, a víz sebesen ömlött kifelé a tóból a csatorna közepén, és visszafelé közelebb a parthoz. Jól oda kellett figyelni hogy hol merre visz, de nem tűnt veszélyesnek. Nagyon kellemes hely volt.

Bar Beach

Feb. 14, kedd. Az idő megint felhősre fordult, de nem volt kellemetlen. Tovább indultunk észak felé a pertmenti úton (Saphhire Coast drive). Sokkal kisebb volt a forgalom mint a főúton, szép erdős-mezős dombok között, de itt is fel-le, mint a hullámvasút. Egy rövid megállót tartottunk Bermagui-ban. 

Látogatók a házunknál

Jó késő ebédidőben értünk az újabb cél-állomásunkhoz. Depot Beach kemping a Murramarang nemzeti parkban fekszik, közvetlenül a tengerpart mögött egy magas eukaliptusz erdőben. Pont egy évvel ezelőtt is itt voltunk és nagyon jól éreztük magunkat. Jó volt visszajönni erre a csodás helyre.

Jó soká tartott mire felállítottuk a lakókocsit és nagyon későn ebédeltünk. Deélután még lesétáltunk egy kicsit a tengerpartra körülnézni.

Feb. 15-18, szerda-péntek. Végre egyszer három nap folyamatosan jó idő volt, meleg de nem túl meleg, napos és nem túl párás. Minden délelőtt a tengerparton üldögéltünk az ernyő alatt, néztük a madarakat, olvastunk, fürödtünk többször a finom friss tiszta tengerben, élveztük a környezetet, meg az egyedüllétet. Alig pár ember volt rajtunk kívül, azok is jó távol tőlünk.

Délután a lakókocsi mellett az előtető alatt csináltuk ugyanazt. Sok különféle madár mászkált keresztül a "nappalinkon", és kenguruk legelésztek a közelünkben. Ideális nyári szabadság.

Napfelkelte

Pénteken felkeltünk reggel 6-kor, kimentünk a tengerpart déli csúcsán a sziklákhoz megnézni a napfelkeltét. 6.25-kor jött fel a nap a tengerből, sűrű szürke felhők közül a tiszta égboltra. Szép látvány volt.

Feb. 19, szombat. Már az előjelzésből tudtuk, hogy ez egy esős nap lesz, és további esős napokat jósoltak. Nem volt értelme tovább maradni. Szerencsére már előző este öszepakoltunk mindent a lakókocsin kívül, a többit szemerkélő esőben fejeztük be és elindultunk hazafelé.

Útközben volt egy pár heves zápor, de mire hazértünk déltájban, ujra kisütött a nap és meleg volt.

Így ért véget ez a déli tengerparti túra, kicsit előbb mint terveztük. Az időjárás nem volt a legjobb, nagyon változékony, hőség egy nap, hűvös, esős másnap. Másik csalódásunk az volt, hogy az új autónk kb. 1 literrel többet fogyaszt vontatáskor, mint a régi, ami ellentmond minden logikának. Talán majd sikerül változtatni rajta. ettől eltekintve megint élveztük a lakókocsis életet, és reméljük, hogy előbb-utóbb megint útra kelhetünk.
