The Yarra at Melbourne CBD

On Tuesday we spent most of the day in Melbourne city centre. We went in by train and walked around the city streets and the South bank of the Yarra, sometimes catching a train. It was a nice sunny and warm day but not too hot. The whole city was buzzing in the anticipation of the Melbourne Cup.

A public holiday in Victoria, lots of people around, huge tv-screens set out at several places so that no one should miss the big event. The main race was at 3 pm, but there were other races from 11 am. We also sat down at Federation Square for a while to watch one of the runs. At that time there were still places to sit down, but by the afternoon the whole square was full of excited spectators.

After lunch we got on a city sight-seeing tram that goes around the centre. A few minutes before 3 pm the tram was at the stop in front of the Victorian Parliament. We waited for the tram to go on, but it did not ... After a while we realised that the driver has disappeared. He came back about 15 minutes later, swiftly got back to the controls and drove on. The "race that stops the nation" has stopped our tram, too. Around 4 pm we had enough of the day's activities, we returned to Caravan Court (CC) by train.
While our caravan was jacked up for repairs we spent the two nights in a spare caravan generously provided by CC. We were happy for this solution and it also confirmed our belief how good our own van is. It was much bigger than ours, but the layout much less comfortable than ours and quite awkward. 
Wednesday morning work has restarted at CC. We did not go out, I preferred to stay close and watch what's going on with our van, hoping to learn something. Early afternoon our van was ready to go. As an added bonus, they also installed a new awning instead of the one damaged by strong winds earlier. CC has done a fine job and we ended up paying much less than expected.

We left CC around 3 pm, happy to be back on the road. We started towards Sydney, but rather than going on the shortest route we made a detour towards the Yarra Valley. This is another famous wine-making region, we saw pretty vineyards and lots of wineries inviting for wine tasting but we had enough of that. We spent the night in a small public reserve among tall mountain ash trees beside a small village, Toolangi.

Moving on Thursday morning we soon reached the Hume Highway and continued straight towards Sydney. In the evening we stopped once more for the night at a public reserve at Binalong. There was even a pool just beside where we could have a plunge before dinner, very refreshing after the 36 degree heat during the day.

Friday was just as hot, but our route was easy and by midday we were home in Sydney. We found everything in order in the house, but most of the plants have dried out in the garden as expected.
So that was the end of our trip. We travelled almost 6000 kms in a month, visited 3 states and a number of National Parks. There were a few highlights, especially the beautiful evenings and nights at various free campsites at the riverbanks, along the Murrumbidgee, the Darling and the Murray. There were also more problems than expected, both with the car and with the caravan, but we solved them all, and it seems these are also part of the deal with this kind of lifestyle. 
Now it's time to start planning for the next trip!

A keddi napot Melbourne belvárosában töltöttük. Vonattal mentünk be, aztán többnyire sétáltunk, néha villamosoztunk, mert egész napra szóló jegyünk volt. Szép napos, kellemes meleg idő volt, az egész város a lóversenyzés lázában égett, rengeteg ember mindenfelé, több helyen óriási tv-képernyők kirakva, hogy nehogy valaki lemaradjon a nagy eseményről. A fő futam, a "Melbourne Cup" délután 3- kor volt, de már 11-től voltak más futamok, mi is elüldögéltünk egy kicsit a Federation téren, a város legújabb, legmodernebb központjában egy ilyen nagy képernyő előtt. Akkor még lehetett ülőhelyet találni, de később az egész tér szinültig megtelt emberekkel. Mi ebéd után egy városnéző villamoson utaztuk körbe a belvárost, és 3 előtt pár perccel éppen a Parlament épülete előtt voltunk egy megállóban. Aztán csak vártunk, vártunk, később észrevettük, hogy a vezető eltűnt, és csak kb 15 perc múlva került elő, visszaült a helyére és szó nelkül folytatta az utat. A "lóverseny ami megállítja az országot" megállította a mi villamosunkat is. Aztán hamarosan elfáradtunk, hazamentünk.
A két éjszakát amíg a mi lakókocsink felbakolva állt egy kölcsön lakókocsiban töltöttük a Caravan Court jóvoltából, az ő saját telepükön. Nagyon kedvesek voltak, örültünk neki, hogy nem kell külön szállásért is fizetnünk, és arra is jó volt, hogy megint megbizonyosodjuk róla, hogy milyen jó beosztású lakókocsink van - mert ez a másik, ugyan jóval nagyobb volt, de elég esetlen, kényelmetlen elrendezéssel. Szerdán újra indult a munka, mi meg már nem mentünk sehova, én inkább néztem, hogy mi történik a lakókocsinkkal, hátha tanulok valami hasznosat. Kora délutánra el is készült amint igérték, és nagyon rendesen megcsinálták. Ráadásként még kicserélték a tavaly megsérült előtetőnket is, aminek nagyon örültünk, és végül nem is került oyan sokba, jóval kevesebbe, mint számítottunk.
Három óra felé elindultunk hazafelé. Az út kb 1000 km Melbourne-től, szerdán még egy kis kitérővel indultunk, a Yarra völgyén keresztül, ez is egy híres borvidék, láttunk sok szép szőlőskertet és borospincét de már nem volt kedvünk kóstolgatni. Egy kis falu mellett, magas "mountain ash" (hegyi kőris a fordítása, de igaziból ez is egy eukaliptusz fajta) erdőben töltöttük az éjszakát egy kis tisztáson.
Csütörtökön aztán hamarosan felmentünk az autópályára, és onnan már elég egyenes volt az út. De elég hosszú ahhoz, hogy mégegyszer megálltunk egy kis faluban egy esti-éjszakai pihenőre. Még egy kis strand is volt mellette, ahol vacsora előtt meg tudtunk mártózni, kellemes volt a 36 fokos meleg után.
Pénteken is nagy hőség volt, de baj nélkül hazaértünk déltájban. Útközben már a következő utazást kezdtük tervezgetni. A házban mindent rendben találtunk, egy szomszéd kislány öntözte a virágokat odaben, de a kertben elég nagy pusztítást végzett a meleg, lehet ujrakezdeni a munkát.
Így ért véget az utunk. Egy hónap alatt utaztunk 6000 km-t, jártunk 3 államban és több nemzeti parkban. Sok szépet láttunk, de a legemlékezetesebbek a folyóparti szabad táborhelyeken töltött esték-éjszakák voltak, a Murrumbidgee, a Darling és a Murray folyó partján. Több problémánk is akadt, mind az autóval, mind a lakókocsival, de mindet meg tudtuk oldani, és úgy látszik, ezek is hozzátartoznak ehhez az életformához.
Most aztán itt az ideje a következő utat tervezni!

Friday morning, we turned South from Echuca. This was an unexpected detour. When the water heater was replaced in Renmark, the people doing the work warned us that the suspension under our van was damaged. We took some photos and talked to the makers of our van, and they advised to get it repaired as soon as possible. As they are located in Melbourne, we decided to change our plans and head down that way. We booked in the van for repairs on Monday, and to fill in the time between, we headed South to pass through the Great Ocean Road. We went through there in 1991 with our kids, but we thought it's worth another look after 22 years.

From Echuca we passed through Bendigo, a large commercial centre with some nice old buildings, it even has a tram line, then had a stop in Castlemain, a much smaller, but equally pretty country town. We had a short walk, saw some big churches, lots of colourful flowers and men with big beards. Then we went on through Ballarat and stopped at Lake Colac, at a nice free campsite along the lake. The weather was nice and warm, we spent an enjoyable evening watching the sunset and the birdlife on the lake.

On Saturday morning we continued Southbound, climbed through the Otway Ranges and by midday we got to Johanna Beach, another well maintained fee campsite just behind the dunes. It is a popular place, lots of people already there, but we managed to find a good place to set up the van. After a quick lunch we went further West to visit the big attractions.

We stopped at all the major sites, the (less than) 12 apostles and other interesting rock formations. The weather was clear and sunny but a strong Southerly wind, and sometimes the flocks of tourists, made it less enjoyable than it looks on the photos. 

But the major sites are now much better developed for this large tourist traffic than they were 22 years ago. The rock towers - the apostles - look a bit more battered, but most of them are still standing.

After returning to our campsite, we still had a nice evening but by midnight the wind and rain has arrived.
Sunday morning was very windy and much colder, with a few showers, but we were lucky to pack up and leave the camp in a dry spell. We drove along the Great Ocean Road to Geelong and on to and across Melbourne. We stopped only a few times for a quick lookout as it was not too comfortable in the very cold, windy weather, no more than 10-12 degrees.

We reached our pre-booked caravan park at Dandenong by around 2 pm. After lunch we went out on a short tour along the shore of Port Phillip Bay just to get a glimpse of the water, but we did not last long in the chilly weather. Some people seemed to enjoy the conditions, though...

Monday morning we packed up early and drove to Caravan Court (the makers of our van), not far from our campsite. We left the van there hoping to get it back all finished and perfect again by the afternoon, then we spent the day at the Mornington Peninsula. The weather was still pretty cold, but gradually improving, becoming sunny and less windy than on Sunday. We went down to the South coast, paid a nostalgic visit to the "London Bridge", another rock arch formation that we saw in 1991 (still standing), then went for a walk in the Point Nepean National Park at the tip of the peninsula.

We saw the Gunners Cottage, the Harold Holt Memorial at Cheviot Beach (where the then Prime Minister of Australia disappeared in the water in 1967), Fort Pearce and Eagles Nest with their huge gun base installations, and Observatory Point on the Bay side. Later we had lunch at a bayside fish-and-chip place, then coffee and a bit of rest at a beach car park.

We drove back to Caravan Court just before 5 pm, but instead of our finished van we got some bad news: they found much more serious damage to the suspension system and the wheels than expected and they were unable to finish the repairs. Tomorrow is Melbourne Cup day (the first Tuesday of November), a public holiday in Victoria, so the repairs won't be completed before Wednesday afternoon.
So now we are stuck in Melbourne for the next two days. Caravan Court were kind enough to set us up on site in one of their spare caravans and we'll have to wait and see what happens with our van on Wednesday. In the meantime we'll try to forget our problems and enjoy our unexpected stay in Melbourne.

Péntek reggel délnek fordultunk Echuca-ból. Ez egy váratlan kitérő volt, mivel amikor kicserélték a vízmelegítőt, figyelmeztettek, hogy a lakókocsi kerékfelfüggesztése erősen sérült. Lefényképeztük a sérülést, elküldtük a cégnek amelyik a lakókocsit készítette, és azt a választ kaptuk, hogy bizony ezt mielőb meg kéne javíttatni. Mivel a cég (Caravan Court) Melbourne-ben van, célszerőnek látszott azonnal arra venni az utat. Hétfőre jelentkeztünk be szervizre, és a hétvégét arra szántuk, hogy a Great Ocean Road-ot 22 év után ujra megnézzük.
Echuca-ból Bendigo felé vezetett az út, ez egy elég nagy vidéki város, sok szép régi épülettel, még villamos is jár benne. Ezután megálltunk egy kis nézelődésre Castlemaine-ben, egy sokkal kisebb, de ugyancsak helyes vidéki kisvárosban. Körülsétáltunk, láttunk néhány szép nagy templomot, sok szines virágot, és sok nagyszakállas öregembert - úgy látszik, itt divat a szakáll. Innen tovább Ballarat után Lake Colac mellett táboroztunk le egy szabad kempinghelyen a tó partján. Szép meleg napos idő volt, kellemes estét töltöttünk itt, néztük az esti fényeket és a pelikánokat a vízen.
Szombat reggel továbbmentünk dél felé, átmásztunk az Otway hegységen és dél felé elértünk Johanna Beach-be, egy újabb szabad kemping-helyre a tengerparti dűnesor mögött. Ez egy igen népszerű hely, jó sokan voltak már, de sikerült egy jó táborhelyet találnunk. Gyorsan megebédeltünk, aztán a lakókocsit hátrahagyva továbbmentünk Nyugat felé. Végigjártuk az összes nevezetes helyeket, a "12 apostolt" (ugyan már nincs meg mind) és a többi érdekes tengerből kiálló szikla-alakzatokat. Az idő még mindig szép tiszta napos volt, de igen erős hideg déli szél fújt, és rengeteg turistával kellett megosztani a látványt. Nagyon fellendült a turista-forgalom mióta itt jártunk, de szerencsére a parkolókat és sétautakat is szépen kiépítették azóta. Estére visszatértünk Johanna Beach-re, még mindig kellemes nyárias időben, a dűnék mögötti szélvédett szakaszon, de éjszakára megjött a beígért változás, erős lehűlés, szél és eső.
Vasárnap reggel szerencsénk volt, sikerült szárazon felpakolni és elindulni. Végighaladtunk a Great Ocean Road-on kelet felé Geelong-ig, csak néhány rövid megállással mert az idő kellemetlen hideg (10-12 fok) és szeles volt, néha kicsit esett is, nem sok kedvünk volt kint nézelődni. Geelong-ból tovább Melbourne-be, keresztül a város és a Port Phillip Bay másik oldalára, ahol előre foglalt szállásunk volt. Ebéd után tettünk egy kört a tengeröböl belső partján, csak hogy lássunk is valamit, de a hideg szél hamar hazazavart.
Hétfő reggel korán felpakoltunk és elvittük a lakókocsit a Caravan Court-hoz, ami elég közel volt a szállásunkhoz. Átadtuk a lakókocsit javításra, mi meg lementünk a Mornington félszigetre körülnézni. Itt is jártunk már 1991-ben, most is megnéztük a "London Bridge"-t, egy ívesre lukadt sziklatömböt a part közelében, aztán a félsziget legvégén a Point Nepean nemzeti parkban tettünk egy kis sétát. Megnéztük Harold Holt emlékművét (ausztrál miniszterlenök, aki 1967-ben itt tűnt el a tengerben fürdés közben), láttunk egy régi erődöt nagy ágyúállásokkal, és más katonai védelmi maradványokat. Az idő sokat javult délelőtt, szép napsütés lett megint, a szél is megenyhült, de a levegő még mindig elég hűvös volt, ideális séta-idő. Az öböl belső odalán ebédeltünk egy fish-and-chips helyen, majd kávéztunk és pihentünk egy kicsit egy nyugodt öbölparti szakaszon. Aztán vissza a CC-hoz, remélve, hogy hamarosan tovább indulhatunk. 
Sajnos azonban a kész lakókocsi helyett rossz hírrel fogadtak: kiderült, hogy a hiba sokkal súlyosabb, mint gondoltuk, nem tudták befejezni a munkát, további alkatrészekre is szükség van. Holnap pedig munkaszüneti nap van Victoria-ban, "Melbourne Cup Day", a "lóverseny, ami megállítja az egész országot", így csak szerdán tudják folytatni, és jó esetben délutánra befejezni a munkát.
Így most két napra ittragadtunk Melbourne-ben. CC volt olyan kedves és adott nekünk egy használaton kívüli lakókocsit amiben meghúzhatjuk magunkat addig, aztán meglátjuk mire jutnak szerdán. Addig meg megpróbáljuk elfelejteni a problémáinkat és lehetőleg kellemesen eltölteni az időt Melbourne-ben.
